She put herself in a terrible position to draw attention from the case when it wasn't necessary at all

She went to law school, handled multiple high cases and has been involved with public scrutiny.

She knew better just admit she screwed up badly.

If you were getting the book thrown at you in court and found out that the district attorney had a relationship with the prosecutor and you're the defendant you would immediately question whether this case/charges was shady.
