IMO it was the correct choice, just look at how many characters will be effected by his approaching death. Lori will lose a the only person that could help her with the birthing of her baby plus anyone else in need of medical attention.

Maggie and Beth will stress over losing both parents now and Beth just got over her suicide attempt from season 2 and now will have to go through it all over again no telling if she will relaspe back into her depression. Looking back, Herschel asking Beth to sing and commenting that he hasn't heard her sing since their mother died was clearly foreshadowing this.

Plus, Herschel's possible turn now looms over the group.

LOL, Darabont was the producer/showrunner. They ended up getting rid of him.

I was scared about how the show would work after getting rid of the main creative force...but shyts lookin' good so far.
