Uncertain grounds
Maybe the alternate images of trinity and neo are some soul type things, prior life fragments or that those are their real current visages that others see but they are still "themselves" on the inside that only the viewer sees

All "Matrix" movies are pretty long. "Reloaded" and "Revolutions" together is about 4 1/2 hours. The original was 2 hrs 18 mins. I wouldn't be shocked if this is 2 1/2 hrs or a little longer. Anyways after all of our speculation about Laurence being alive or why Morphues is young. This will be answered when the movie drops of course. But Lana has come out and talked about Neo and Trinity's resurrection and how the death of her Parents birthed the idea for the film:

Matrix director Lana Wachowski resurrected Neo and Trinity for ‘comfort’

Matrix director Lana Wachowski resurrected Neo and Trinity for ‘comfort’

The director sheds light on her deeply personal reasons for bringing the film’s iconic couple back to life in the upcoming reboot, The Matrix: Resurrections14September 2021

Lana Wachowski, co-director of the Matrix trilogy, has spoken out regarding her decision to revive characters Neo and Trinity in the film’s much-anticipated fourth instalment, The Matrix: Resurrections. Having both apparently died at the end of The Matrix: Revolutions, the imminent return of the iconic black-clad pair, played by Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss, has been met with speculation. And the release of the upcoming film’s full-length trailer last month didn’t alleviate our feverish hypothesizing as to how everyone’s favorite dystopian couple managed to evade death.

Speaking as part of a panel on screenwriting at this month’s International Literature Festival Berlin, Lana Wachowski shed light on how her decision to resurrect Neo and Trinity came in the wake of her grief after the death of both her parents and a close family friend. She explained, “My dad died, then this friend died, then my mum died. I didn’t really know how to process that kind of grief. I hadn’t experienced it that closely … You know their lives are going to end and yet it was still really hard.”

Describing the healing potential of storytelling, she continued, “My brain has always reached into my imagination and one night, I was crying and I couldn’t sleep, and my brain exploded this whole story. And I couldn’t have my mum and dad, yet suddenly I had Neo and Trinity, arguably the two most important characters in my life.” She continued, “It was immediately comforting to have these two characters alive again, and it’s super simple. You can look at it and say, ‘Okay, these two people died‘ and, ‘Okay, bring these two people back to life’ and, ‘Oh, doesn’t that feel good.’ Yeah, it did! It’s simple, and this is what art does and that’s what stories do, they comfort us.”

While the project may have been cathartic for Lana Wachowski, her sister and co-director of the first three films, Lilly Wachowski, decided not to be involved in the fourth Matrix instalment, recently stating: “There was something about the idea of going backward and being a part of something that I had done before that was expressly unappealing”.

The Matrix: Resurrections is planned for release on December 22 in the UK and in the US

We finally have a legit answer why this movie exists: https://gamerant.com/matrix-resurrections-neo-trinity-return-explained/amp/

After losing her mother, her father, and a friend, the director had trouble understanding how to process that amount of grief, as it's an immense amount of loss. Everyone handles grief in their own way. No matter how much of an understanding one has that death is inevitable, it still will catch anybody by surprise when it actually happens. "You know their lives are going to end and yet it was still really hard," the director said at a screenwriting panel for the International Literature Festival Berlin. "My brain has always reached into my imagination and one night, I was crying and I couldn't sleep, and my brain exploded this whole story." The director continues, "And I couldn't have my mom and dad, yet suddenly I had Neo and Trinity, arguably the two most important characters in my life".

The director describes the feeling as "immediately comforting" to have both Neo and Trinity alive again in The Matrix Resurrections. She said, "It's super simple. You can look at it and say: 'ok, these two people die and ok, bring these two people back to life and oh, doesn't that feel good.' Yeah, it did! It's simple, and this is what art does and that's what stories do, they comfort us." There aren't many words to express the deep amount of loss experienced, but it's good to see the silver lining for the creative director and that she was able to find something to alleviate the pain.

Edit: i only just saw the post above me my bad

nah apparently Morpheus died in some online game part of the Matrix universe in 2009 or something. They’re just staying in the universe. The Matrix has always been big on being interactive and using new media to keep the story going.
