It was explicitly stated he was recruited from the future version of the protagonist. Neil outright told the protagonist that.
Exactly, he was recruited by the future version of JDW. Nowhere was it explicitly stated that Neil was recruited in the future and not in the past. You need to stop that forward thinking, breh.

But there were plenty of inverted characters that were part of the TENET organization, and the main rule of TENET is not to pass on information. Everything was from a need to know. That's why throughout the movie, everyone the protagonist talked to, only could tell them just what THEY know and nothing more. Neil pretended to do that as well, but he's the ONLY one that really knows the full picture, to the point of knowing that he had to go back in the turn-style to sacrifice his life for everything to work out as it was destined to happen. So why the future version of the protagonist inform him everything and not anyone else on his team? What made Neil SO SPECIAL over anyone else of the TENET organization to be privileged to the entire information?
Isn't this obvious? Neil was special because he played such a vital role in this mission and cycle. He taught JDW almost everything, in a way he prepared JDW for the true mission of TENET before JDW actually did. Again, his importance comes from the full circle effect of being the first "friend" of JDW in TENET.

And the name Maximilien is shown in the credits as an Easter egg.
If Nolan really used the end credits for this narrarive then I buy it a little more, but mostly it would just show how incredibly hard Nolan tries to be clever if he couldn't be bothered to work this into the actual film.

They really need to do some Mulan type scenario where they charge premium access fees and just drop it

A holiday people usually use to get away.. it's not known as a big box office weekend.

20 is only half of what Dunkirk made first week and it has a 200 million dollar budget. This was a disaster, they should have just dropped the VOD for $30.

You can't call this a disaster as this is unprecedented circumstances. You're comparing it to something from the middle of summer 3 years ago. This was a holiday weekend during a pandemic. People are afraid to go to the theaters breh.

And I'm hearing mulan underperformed so not sure how well this would have done on VOD at $30.

They probably should have delayed it til next year as it seems every other movie will do but something had to test the waters.

But as I stated i was one of 3 people in an entire 24 theater multiplex. Football returned and Corona, but still. I am worried for the future of the theaters

Saw it last night. My date and I were the only ones in the theater. It was the perfect opportunity to mess around but we were really interested in it. She normally can’t stand Nolan movies but she enjoyed it. I also enjoyed it. The only thing I thought was overhyped was the 747 scene. Other than that it was like reading a good sci-fi, spy, thriller Novel.
