They really are betting this shyt will play in theaters for 18 months. :laff:

not impossible. unlikely maybe even today, but not impossible.

if you can only fill theaters 1/3 full (or however they do) and only have a few, tickets may be hard to get/sold out for long long periods of time. plus it may take that long (assuming boots dont cut in too deep) to contractually gross what they need.

Oh, I know exactly the math they're working. It's not a coincidence a bunch of Nolan films (basically everything from TDK to Dunkirk) got re-released here after reopening (Europe). WB has been tracking theater growth and audiences since day one, they are expecting a bigger theater expansion in the rest of the world starting September which means they want to use the last week of August to generate hype since it's almost a limited release.

Two things though:
Multiple European countries have been seeing growth in Corona cases again, with some countries reestablishing part of their lifted restrictions, so reopening and expansion might not go as fast as they might think.

If theaters are going to get closer to an acceptable capacity, other studios are gonna ramp up. Disney has multiple films on their shelf ready to go and I can see them buying up all the IMAX, Dolby 3D and 4DX screens like they did for Star Wars.

In 08, TDK had that xtra resonance with the so-called "War on Terror"

I get that feeling with his universal big-canvas themes that TENET may too - even if it has nothin directly to do with disease and brutalization of the oppressed (but it would be interesting to learn why Nolan decided to star a black man this time aside from liking his acting and persona which is unsaid)

800mill sounds like a lot, I remember reading 400-500mil back in April.

This movie is over-the-top expensive though, some notes:
  1. Filming took place in 7 countries (Denmark, Estonia, India, US, Norway, UK, Italy)
  2. "A restaurant set named "Chaand" was built near the hotel but never used, serving only as an alternative"
  3. Instead of using miniatures and visual effects (VFX) for a plane crash sequence, Nolan determined that purchasing a Boeing 747 proved more cost effective
  4. October saw them in a desert outside Palm Springs, where an abandoned city had been constructed and hundreds were clothed in military camouflage uniforms.
  5. Executives calculated that each postponement cost Warner Bros. between $200,000 and $400,000 in marketing fees
This is fascinating to me, given the backlog of movies and how the glut in 2021 will likely lower BO receipts. People won’t be getting budgets like this for a long ass time
