The people and government itself is the reason why college is so expensive :mjlol:

As soon as the government started guaranteeing student loans colleges starting competing with each other and the price started going up , the cost of college barley rose anything for decades before this happen.

And so many people get pointless degrees in fields that have no jobs or money , then they are either screwed or go back and get another degree or masters :russ:

Which is also the reason a college degree is required for so many jobs when its not necessary at all
I got a degree in accounting and couldn’t find a job. I switched to I.T.

That is only part of the reason. You're ignoring:

* college ranking algorithms heavily incentivized a ramp-up in amenities and administrative costs
* states pulled back their subsidization of higher education
* increase in high-end salaries along with an increase in the # of people attending college created more competition for limited slots allowing colleges to ramp up prices

In 1960 Harvard accepted 35% of its applicants. By 1997 it was down to 12%. Last year they accepted just 3%. When competition is that stiff you can charge whatever you want.

I don’t think what Harvard charges is the issue. It’s public state colleges that should be free for tax payers. Or at the very least “at cost”

I grabbed Harvard because the statistics for admission were easy. But the three points I made are true for state colleges as well - especially the fact that most states have slashed their budget for subsidizing higher education so the government isn't covering nearly as much of the cost of a public education as they used to.

On top of that, state schools have expanded like crazy with their development and real estate deals. It’s a bad recipe.
