Also speaking of open doors, when Hooper's note said leave the door open 3 inches it made me think that might be a little wink at the audience that maybe he made it into the upside down before the machine exploded.

As someone that went to a mostly white school at that time, they were not looking for hip-hop till bout 87. This is set in the damn midwest in a small town. They damn sure wasn't looking for hip-hop. People forget white people were scared as hell of hip-hop and people were living segregated as hell. If you weren't listening to a black radio station or watching MTV enough to occasionally catch a black video that wasn't MJ or Lionel, you weren't seeing much black music in that sphere. The use of the fire crackers to fight the Mind Flayer was a nod to the movie the Gate from the late 80’s. I remember watching it when I was a kid a lot on the tv in the 90’s. I remember in the last fight with the monster in that movie they used a fire rocket to destroy it. Also the scene with Billy and L reminded me of the Gmork and Ateryu’s conversation in the Never Ending Story I’m wondering if that’s why they put the song in the show
