I will say based on what we have seen of the picard character it is hard to believe he would leave star fleet at any age though unless they forced him out.

Nope he didn't leave enterprise was in dry dock and being refit. This is literally a constant them through the series and although he would give it some thought he will never do it.

Yeah it wasn't so much that it wasn't a guarantee but that his friend Lewis his family and that commission that was trying to make a new subcontinent were all pushing it on him but I see what you mean.
