$800M is pretty bad for good Spiderman movie associated with Disney/Marvel

Has it even passed BvS?

No it's not, that's not even approaching bad. That's about what this film was expected to make. Disney/Marvel nor Sony were expecting Spider-Man homecoming to be a billion dollar film.

I normally don't get into the financial shyt lol but on what planet is 800 million bad when you only spent 170 on production and maybe another 200 on the promo? Not to mention it's the first spider man movie since spider man 3 to do that and may even surpass spider man 3. It's also the first spider man movie since spider man 3 to make 300 million domestically which is also a big deal. Not every movie needs to make a billion to be successful so that shouldn't be the benchmark.

Seems like excuse making to be honest. What was the point of Sony sending it over if it wasn't going to make significantly more money.

Because just like BvS it left a significant amount of money on the table.

But unlike BvS there's not really a glaring reason why.

To reverse the trend of spider man box office going down domestically and around the world and to get some goodwill back. And they did both of those

Ah so you're this guy now. Even without their books or knowing their expectations you know what they expected and wanted for the franchise. More power to you homie

I guess.. But when JL under performs, and it probably will, people better not say shyt:hubie:

People were predicting marvel to hit the billion dollar mark this year. They're 0/2.

Also, you damn well Marvel and especially Sony ain't happy with WW making more than spiderman domestically:pachaha:

BvS narrative: it left hundreds of millions on the table because it was shyt

Spiderman, makes similar numbers, while being good. Plus it's attached to the biggest franchise ever.

So it seems to me that maybe people are overestimating Spidey's popularity and he's already maxing out on the box office potential

Homie underperforms by who's measure tho? This is the point I'm getting at. Unless you work for WB you don't know what their expectations are or what their books say a movie needs to make. JL isn't a failure to me if it doesn't make a billion dollars. That's asinine. That doesn't mean WB feels the same way but they very may. We get caught up in this talk as if we're accountants working for the studios and we're not. WB as a studio has had the best year of any studio. They're good right now. If JL does similar numbers to Wonder Woman and gets similar critic and fan praise I feel like they're happy with that

Who were the people prediciting Marvel would hit the billion dollar mark this year? Are these the same people that argued BvS was a lock to make over a billion because it was Batman and Superman?

That narrative was mostly fan created and driven. fans hyped up that movie as a lock to be the highest grossing movie on the year and one of the highest grossing movies of all time, discounting how much rewatchability factors into a movie doing something like that.

I don't recall seeing any insane expectations for Spider-Man Homecoming. Nobody was predicting it'd be the highest grossing film of the year or even the highest grossing Spider-Man film. It just needed to outperform the Amazing series which it already has done.

I think you also gotta keep in mind that BvS was the first time two of the biggest superheroes of all time shared the screen together in a motion picture. Compare that to Spider-Man Homecoming being the third start to a Spider-Man movie franchise in 15 years and it's clear why expectations for BvS were way higher.
