There's a following that wants to see the original cut of Sonic with the horror design that they were originally going to run with. Why? I have no idea. The internet can be stupid.

let's just say they did make it shytty on purpose but had the other design in the tuck. What if the shytty one actually had a positive reaction?

Unlikely the majority would support a Sonic that looks nothing like the Sonic everyone grew up on. Pretty safe bet by Sega's marketing team.

The current one still doesn't look like the one we grew up on though. It's infinitely better than the other design, though.

My point remains...they wouldn't waste money to troll, not when it wasn't guaranteed a redesign would be better. This shyt ain't free

99% of early screening trailers look nothing like the end result movie and/or scenes they show in the trailer don't even make the final cut. In the case of a CGI movie, they would have to pay for marketing of the trailer and to redo the scenes anyway. If SEGA can afford CGI for an entire movie, they can afford for cgi in a trailer, especially if you only see Sonic in a few scenes in the either trailer anyway.

For an April Fool's Day joke they should've released a trailer giving Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles their horror designs. That would probably be an expensive AFD joke though.

SEGA's hardware division was genius. They created two business models (gamepass and multiplayer/online) that laid the blueprint for what we see today. They just were too ahead of their time and put too many eggs in one basket.

SEGA ain't made hardware in decades. They made 100 million off a mod. They have a syndicated cartoon worldwide. What makes you think they don't have the money to make a CGI trailer?

First you'd have to specify how much money was spent to say it was a waste of money. Also, as already explained, there was no risk. SEGA knew when they made that sonic is was fugly. Plus, there is a scene in the movie where the old man draws the meme sonic. So why would you parody something that you actually planned on making official? It was a joke from the beginning.

You just proved my point. Redoing the CGI for the ENTIRE movie would take much longer than 3 months. It's obvious that the trailer was genius marketing and they had the normal looking Sonic in the plans the entire time.
