WWE SmackDown To Continue Using Picture-In-Picture Commercial Breaks, Top 10 SmackDown Ad Spenders - WrestlingInc.com

Broadcasting & Cable WWE SmackDown broadcasts on the USA Network.

We've seen this technology used some since SmackDown went live on USA but apparently it will be a regular feature going forward, beginning later this month or in early June. When the show goes to commercial, the sound on the in-ring action goes down but viewers are still able to see what's happening while the commercial plays with sound and motion.
When testing picture-in-picture on SmackDown in the past, they found that ratings went up 13% during those commercial breaks. That lift raised the C3 ratings for the whole show by almost 2%. The test also had good results for advertisers.

NBCU will be using the same technology during the 2018 Winter Olympics. NBCU Executive Vice President of Network Partnerships Josh Feldman commented:

"We want to improve the viewing experience for fans with marketing and advertising, versus just having marketing advertising be part of the viewing experience. Picture-in-picture improves the viewing experience. That's the mission of what we're trying to do here."

NBCU Executive Vice President of Ad Sales Mark Marshall noted that WWE has "a huge fan base that not only watches it live, but also watches the commercials and pays attention to the commercials. That's part of what we're trying to build and part of the reason why we're doing picture in picture. With SmackDown, this provides us the chance to have an advertiser be the hero and provide that live action."

B&C also listed the top 10 spenders on WWE SmackDown, year to date:

WWE Network: $742,418

Taco Bell: $618,033

Verizon: $583,050

The Real Cost: $559,728

NutriSystem: $559,728

Universal Pictures: $536,406

Domino's: $513,084

GEICO: $443,118

Burger King: $396,474

Subway: $396, 474

WWE Smackdown Live viewership bombs before Backlash - Pro Wrestling Dot Net

Tuesday’s WWE Smackdown Live averaged 2.175 million viewers for USA Network, according to Showbuzzdaily.com. The number was down from the 2.348 million count from last Tuesday’s edition.

Powell’s POV: A new low for Smackdown in 2017 and heading into the Backlash event. WWE advertised Jinder Mahal vs. AJ Styles as well as Randy Orton vs. Baron Corbin heading into the show. It’s worth noting that the show aired opposite the first hour of an NBA Playoff game that topped five million viewers, and the NBA Draft Lottery that drew 3.224 million viewers for ESPN. We hope to have the actual rating later today.

------------------------------------------------------------

Put Orton and Corbin in the main event brehs.

You can't really blame it on the NBA because there isn't much of an intersection between the two audiences.

Eh, I watched the first hour then dipped as soon as Warriors/Spurs started.

Considering how bad that game was I probably should have stayed. :francis:

So which one of these advertisers would pull out if the E started catering to a 14+ audience again? :leostare:

The WWE has gotten a wider spectrum of advertisers because of their PG programs. They have no reason to change it.

Exactly. I'm no WWE historian but weren't they PG before the AE, and only got rid of it cause of WCW/Monday Night Wars? :patrice:

Exactly. This is the biggest cop out argument for why the shows have been shyt. It doesnt have to be full attitude era but at least interesting. And no Orton.

not really

the tv raiting has noting to do with the quality of the show and never had

It actually is. Smackdown has been PG since it's inception, but with the environment surrounding the WWE and society in general then, there were certain things you could get away with. Remember that Torrie/Dawn Marie hotel make out session in 04? Do you really think the WWE could pull that off in 2017:pachaha:? Brock Lesnar beating Hulk Hogan to a pulp and wiping his blood on his chest?? The WWE only recently even started allowing blood. The quality of a show SHOULDN'T be affected based on whether something is PG or not, but the way the general society is, it very well has affected it.
