I'm trying to retain it, learning about how to prevent my hair from breaking off etc. It's almost waist length because I eat really healthy and drink a lot of water. But I'm still pretty new to hair typing etc.

as a Stylist my advice...best way to keep it from breaking is regular trims. every 4 to 6 weeks(whether you think you "need" it or not). an 1/8 of an inch or so which is not even noticeable if done correctly. making sure to keep those ends "fresh" and split end free is a BIG key that a lot of women miss.

1/8th of an inch is pretty microscopic. Problem is most stylists can't measure.
I've been to waist length and back before and headed there again now. If you're not blessed with resilient hair stick with the basics. Low heat, low manipulation, low damage (chemicals, etc). Don't read too much into hair types and growth tips. Pinning down your hair type does absolutely nothing. Focus more on what works for your hair and sticking to it.
I was having an internal argument the other day about blow drying my hair :-/ But I work out too much to even fathom straight hair.

you are correct that's EXACTLY the problem. too many stylists are heavy handed with the shears
...which in turn makes a lot of woman not wanna get trimmed as often as they should.
