This shyt has sooooo many mysteries;

Who is the that “watcher”?
What’s ups with the Ghost child?
Are the androids good or bad?
Are the religious people good or bad?
What is in them pits?

I think its pretty clear that the Mithraic side and the Atheist side were BOTH "bad".
The Mithraic's created the Necromancer androids (which probably were one of the factors in destroying the Earth).
The Atheists were fond of using child soldiers and treating them like Nazi Spartans.
So far, Father is the ONLY character that suggested at this point that both sides need to put their differences aside and work together if the human race is going to survive.

I'm guessing that the giant serpents are still alive in the pits. When Father was climbing down into the pit he found what looked like shedded snake skin.


My guess is that some of the "dead" kids either transformed bodily into creatures, or their memories were absorbed into some kind of alien "Matrix" that exists on the planet.

The people using child soldiers and kamikaze tactics typically aren't the ones with the technological upper hand. I'm thinking the Nu Catholics probably only came to real, organized power after signs that the world was fukked became clear.

The opening credits show what looks like nukes going off.
So if the Mithraics invented the necromancers, the Atheists probably responded with nuclear weapons.
In other words, the arms race itself destroyed the world.
