Spike Lee: why he brought back ‘She’s Gotta Have It’ on Netflix

Spike Lee never envisioned revisiting his 1986 indie film “She’s Gotta Have it,” which was groundbreaking by focusing on a single black woman who was unapologetically dating three dudes at once.

But his wife Tonya Lewis Lee had other ideas. She convinced him give the film a modernized twist via television, enabling him to delve deeper into the characters while maintaining its distinctive, vibrant style. Netflix will release the 10 episodes to subscribers on Thanksgiving. His wife was also an executive producer and several female writers contributed to the expanded story lines.
“She had the vision I didn’t have,” said Lee, a 1979 Morehouse College graduate who recently visited Spelman College to give advice to undergraduates and talk about the new Netflix series. (His mom and grandmother graduated Spelman.) “I did it already. She said, ‘You should think about bringing this back and make it contemporary. We ran with it. I’m very grateful Netflix stepped up.”
He said this is, in a way, a five-hour movie and given how people view shows on Netflix, that’s not a far-off statement. And to ensure continuity, he directed all ten episodes. “That was not a discussion,” said the famously hands-on Lee.
And as a filmmaker, he didn’t change his approach for what is conceived as “TV” on Netflix. “We’re making cinema,” he said, “not a TV show.”

So we are going to forget CHiraq ever happened. So if you look at the original She Gotta have it (which should be considered decades ahead of its time now), Girl 6, She hate me and a few other joints. Spike will be bringing something here.

Kerry Washington's portrayal in SHe hate me is probably one of the Top 5 female characters of all time. SHe was pressed to get what she wanted. The plan was supposed to work this way but since you're an idiot, I got to break it down for you and give it to you in doses. She was pressed.

I watched a little bit of the first episode early this morning. For some reason it just didn't stick with me. I understand the premise of the show but felt no strong emotion for Nola (the main character). Outside of the fact that she was juggling multiple partners and she has instances of street harassment, there wasn't anything compelling about her story that would want me to keep viewing outside the first episode.

It has similar undertones to Insecure, which, while I think is a great show, is a tad overhyped.

Agree 100. Show lacks rawness. Character development is on zero. And I'm not going to get into the so called Marsblackmon. I don't expect much from Spike these days anyways,

With all that said, show is very watchable. The soundtrack is hard body. :dame:

All in all, a great show to watch with your chick. Could have been classic though.

It's very very watchable but also very forgettable.

While I don't think Nola isnt the most interesting protagonist, her background as this new age alternative "woke" black woman navigating NYC in her mid 20's is somewhat fresh.

I feel the cinematography was a tad lacking and Spike didn't get as much of the Brooklyn, NYC vibe as well as some other shows, namely "Master of None".

You rightly said it's an easy show to watch with your girl. At 30 mins a pop you can finish the entire season in about 5 hours aka a lazy afternoon.

Show just seems like untapped potential. I'll be keeping an eye out for DeWanda Wise though, she played Nola quite well. Nola reminds me of this "woke" sister (complete with septum ring) that curved me in college.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Netflix has announced what’s arriving (and departing) from its streaming video lineup this month, and is taking the holiday spirit pretty seriously. You’ll have an ample number of Christmas-themed shows and films to choose from, as well as solid features that you can enjoy all year long (or as long as they last on Netflix). With the advent of the season also comes the loss of some great cinematic works, so here’s what you should watch before they disappear.

The first week in December, Netflix is adding films like 8 Mile, V for Vendetta, and Full Metal Jacket to its selection, along with kid-friendly titles like A StoryBots Christmas, the fifth season of the animated series All Hail King Julien (based on the DreamWorks film Madagascar) , and Home: For the Holidays. If you’ve got older (and goofier) kids, you can enjoy Nacho Libre and Ace Ventura: Pet Detective together, starting this month.

You can also check out Will Smith’s Netflix Original film, Bright. It’s an action-packed buddy cop film that looks like a mashup of Training Day and a Dungeons & Dragons Monster Manual (his partner is an orc). The dark holiday comedy and Netflix original film, El Camino Christmas, stars Luke Grimes as a man who ends up locked in a liquor store during Christmas Eve. Blockbuster sequels like Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, and Planet Earth II will be available for your viewing pleasure, at least until Disney decides to pull its catalog from Netflix to build its own streaming service in 2019.

Of course, what goes up must come down, and Netflix will have removed some primo content as December runs its course. For one, the documentary about one of the largest single-family homes in America, Queen of Versailles, will be removed December 13. If you’ve never seen the FX sitcom It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, you’ve got until December 9 to binge on 11 seasons of the award-winning program before it disappears from the catalog. Jake Gyllenhaal’s Nightcrawler departs from Netflix the day after, so if thrillers are your jam, take a look before it goes up in smoke.

You talking about Garrett Hedlund? I was waiting for his come up since Troy but he got a lot of duds under his belt.
