Rory literally shytted on them nikkas in this conversation. It’s a damn shame and fortunately he was there cause if he wasn’t Mecca would’ve tried to say more slick shyt than he said.

I agree Rory mopped the floor with them but I think Mecca made a great point towards the end. The "bad beats" argument gets mixed up with the "sell out" argument in a way NO other rapper deals with. I get why boom bap stans don't like Trackmasters but you cannot possibly tell me The Message is a bad beat. We can play that shyt for most rap fans from multiple eras and they'll say it's fire. Only beat that's meh on IWW is Nas Is Coming which is one of many weak Dre beats from that era but it's not "bad." The intro and hook are what kills that song more than anything.

I Am has a couple meh beats but it's largely a product of that era. Super cheesy keyboard shyt, synths etc. Why does Nas get killed for that but Jay doesn't? Every noteworthy rapper was rapping over corny synths in 1999, hence Swizz and Manny Fresh running shyt.

To me the questionable beat shyt doesn't become a problem until AFTER 2002, especially in comparison to what Jay was rapping over at the same time. Listening to SD and Black Album back to back, beat wise, is wild.

Ehh. But if u look at God’s Son and Lost Tapes vs BP2 it’s gonna be damn hear just as cringe. shyt just compare Black Album and BP2. Same thing. Nas didn’t drop an album the year Black Album dropped. SD is when Nas decided to go damn near completely anti industry. On top of that. The narrative started after God’s Stepson imo. Wasn’t shyt “slick” about IWW. But Nas never stayed stagnant. No one album sounds like the other. That’s what makes him so great imo.

Yes the bad beat thing was really a problem during the SD hhid and untitled era. And that's only because at that time ny rappers didn't really know how to sound since the south took over.

Rory also made a great point about how a song don't become a great song just because of the instrumental. The performance of the Mc also make the song.
For example, memory lane is a legendary song. Scientifik the rapper made a song with the same beat 2 years earlier and the song was just ok. Nas made it what it was.
And A LOT of rappers passed on great beats before. Nore talked about it often. Sometimes just because you hear a great beat don't mean you have the vision to make a great song with it

When young people listen to jay and Nas discography they praise nad' music more because his beats while less trendy are way more timeless. Jay beats were great for the time they were recorded but tend to age more badly. Except for the blueprint because that's soul sample and soul sample sound dope no matter what time you listen to them

I think that's a common misconception with Hip Hop production. Blueprint is timeless because its one of those things where everything just aligned. Its not a perfect album by any means, but I don't think the soul sampling alone makes it a classic. "Takeover" is classic and that's a glip of a Rock record. There's some songs with soul samples that time hasn't been kind to because it lacks the "soul" element: the producer either adding weak/wack drums or adding their own signature that personalizes the sample.

And this is the thing too. I wish it was brought up. When young people react to Nas without any preconceived notions. They praise the fukk out of him. Even his beats. And I know this cause I sometimes go on reaction binges cause it brings me back to when I first heard some shyt. Alotta the time they will come in having a favorite rapper and then walk away saying Nas is the GOAT after a few months. And that’s after they have reacted to Jay, Biggie, Pac and all the greats. I always tell nikkas when it comes to beats. As long as there’s a dope base to work with. The artist does the rest of the work. Like Hail Mary by Pac. Listen to that beat by itself and u would never think it would ever be a lead single. Pac carried that shyt.

Bro every single time the young cats listen to Nas music consistently they realize he is the goat. You are correct. They know right when they hear it. I’ve heard a few of them say they have no idea why people say he has wack beats.

Nas album will be interesting, and after three very good tapes he has me checked in

The Raekwon album is extremely exciting. First full LP since The Wild back in 2017. While Rae hasn't been absent in music it's gonna be very interesting to see what he can do these days.

Ghostface...I won't say no to. I'm still content with Sour Soul being his sunset album

The Big L and De La projects concern me I don't really want a new posthumous tape for the former, but the De La tape has a chance to be their farewell piece in the same way Tribe's last album was.

If the rumors are true and the mystery album is a Slick Rick tape, I'm all in
