NY all day..Da Stead & BK..
the magazines and a lot of people thought i am was better than it was written at that time. I am got 4,5 mics (and that was the retail not the bootleg that was reviewed contrary to popular belief) and iww 4 mics. To me I am is like vol 1 for jay, the highs are incredible but the lows are bad so it's a mixed bag

I would have loved for mass appeal to drop a documentary about the original vision for the anniversary of both iam and nastradamus and a release of the original double album as intented or at least all the unrealesed from them session in cdq
I Am >>>> Vol 1. Just being clear. Lol. Nipsey wanted to do a documentary on I Am.

Instead of taking I Am... for what it is, people tend to hate it for everything it isn't. Sure, the album is inconsistent after "You Won't See Me Tonight" and that song is out of place even though I like it. Then we got gems in "Nas Is Like" and "Undying Love" late in the album. Still a solid album and one if the best of 1999.

This just came up

shyt is funny to me, I Am is very similar to all Jay albums from Vol. 1 through Dynasty.

Very high highs. Some fan favorite deep cuts. Some weak filler joints. A few tracks where he rapping his ass off but the production ain't aged well

But certain dudes will label I Am "trash" off 2-3 tracks then turn around and call Dynasty "a classic off the intro alone" :mjlol:

see what I mean people love/hate this joint :pachaha:
NYOM 2- classic possible top 20 Nas song
Hate me Now- classic
Small World- classic possible top 35 ish Nas song
Favor for Favor- love this joint
We Will Survive- good song
Ghetto Prisoners- very good
You won't see me tonight- good never understood the hate I've heard worse Nas/R&B collabs
I want to talk to you- average
Dr. Knockboot- just:mjlol::snoop: experimental Nas gone wrong:mjlol:
Life is what you make it- dope
Big Things-:snoop:
Nas is Like- all time classic
Kissing-cut awful hook:dead:
Money is my bytch- probably cut but I don't dislike this joint:pachaha:
Undying Love- All time classic top 30 Nas song probably

I Am is not the typical mixed bag of good & bad. It has all time great joints with some of his worst:pachaha:. That's why it's difficult to rank it in his discography overall

To me. Worst song on the album is Big Things. I think shyt like Ghetto Prisoners is classic. I love everything about it. And Nas was ultra poetic on that shyt. I didn't hate Dr Knockboot. I was in high school when this album dropped I remember I brought the CD to school and mad people was hype and passing it around the classroom reading the credits. By the time it got back to me the teacher peeped and took it from me and started reading off the track listing. When he got to Dr Knockboot he just started laughing along with the class. Lol

"You Won't See Me Tonight" is the type of song Drake wishes he made. A bouncy, R&B/Hip Hop song about being emotionally unavailable to a woman who already has a man, and it features Aaliyah. Nas pulled it off without using profanity. One of the best Nas songs that wasn't a single, but should've been.

It was getting play on Hot 97 before Columbia/Nas moved on to Nastradamus:manny:

Big Things definitely the worst. Bad hooks took down otherwise solid tracks on I Wanna Talk To You and K-I-SS-I-N-G

I know Dr Knockboot and Money Is My bytch both get shytted on a lot but both songs funny and entertaining to me. But any time Nas try to do something humorous or lighthearted it end up polarizing

Overall, good album with some skips, that we all know was a classic in its intended form and we got to hear all those bootlegged tracks anyway

Biggie can make Playa Hater but Nas can't make Dr Knockboot. Let alone Dr Knockboot he was speaking real shyt. Lol. And I don't wanna hear nothing about the beat because it ain't much different than Aint No nikka in that dept.

Wherever nikkas need to be told on
I could never hate on I Am… because it was the first Nas record I bought. I “borrowed” IWW from my sis and got to illmatic late. I think it’s a good project, just uneven and inconsistent. Super highs and some lows. Kind of the way I feel about Stillmatic although I rate that higher.

I literally felt robbed by Biggie on "Playa Hater". I wasn't expecting him to sing. That beat went hard and it was wasted. It was funny, but it doesn't warrant repeat listens.

Never thought about it until your post, but "Ain't No" and "Knockboot" both have those faux 70's background music for porn sounding beats. Only with "Knockboot" it works considering the content even though I don't like the song.
