He’s got a “secret project” in the works that I assume will be up next.

My GUESS is that Dr Dre or Premo are involved in that project

“Nas Album Done” will probably never see the light of day. That was a Def Jam project.

Lost Tapes 3 is probably a few years away.

Does anyone remember the last bit of news, hint, or clue regarding the secret project? I've been listening to Nas last 3 projects and I am ready for more.

All he said was it was a secret project. No real hints.

He’a been in the studio with Dre and when asked about premo he said “Mums the word on Premier”

Ok, so now to the Nas album done project. Nas was working on that album before NASIR but put NASIR out first. Do you think that Nas did all that Nas Album Done work at Def Jam and none of it at Mass Appeal?

He was signed to Def Jam when he was working on that project so that means Def Jam owns the Masters to that project. Labels just don’t give away albums to artists when they move on. Thats why Lost Tapes 2 came out via Def Jam.

Thing is we don’t even know if the “Nas Album Done” project was ever...you know...DONE lol. I’d wager we’ll never hear those songs in entirety.

Cool fun fact

Nas is nominated for best rap album. He was nominated in that category back in the ‘90s, wasn’t he?

He was. Nas was first nominated for best rap album in the 1999 awards year for I Am…, which allows him to set a new record for the longest span of best rap album nominations (22 years). He swipes the title from Jay-Z, who was first nominated in 1998 (Vol. 2..Hard Knock Life) and was nominated most recently in 2017 with 4:44 (a 20-year span). Nas’ nominated album this year is King’s Disease.

Not necessarily. He may have recorded that music while he was on Def Jam, but it doesn't mean those songs are Def Jam's property. A huge reason why Lost Tapes 2 was a Def Jam release is because it had material like "You Mean The World To Me". That song at one time had a home on Hip Hop Is Dead. It even popped up on early tracklists.

With "Nas Album Done", we don't know if he ever turned in a version of that album in to Def Jam. As you said, we don't know if he ever completed it. For all we know, it is still a work in progress. He was still working on that project after Nasir dropped. At the time Nasir dropped, he revealed he was still working on the album he halted. He talked about working with Swizz and RZA. As we know, a couple of those songs ended up on Lost Tapes 2, but Nasir ended his contract with Def Jam. Nas has been tight lipped about the music he started working on after Life Is Good dropped. He was even telling journalists not to ask questions about new music. So whatever it is has been a secret and he's only revealed producers he's worked with at different points in that process. He was supposed to release a title back in 2013, but he never did.

yeah, that’s kind of what I was getting at. He may have been working on it and had work all over with everyone but did he turn it in. Seems to me that around that time he was talking about starting his own label and putting out the first mass appeal project. Also, something makes me think that Nas either said or implied that he held the Nas Album Done work back and instead quickly went to work on NASIR, with the sole purpose of getting off Def Jam. I’m probably wrong but I know I was once under the impression that they were really working to make the album special, like bringing in that Hip Hop dude that has an ear for beats and when they felt like that had a really good product they just decided to hold it back and make it the first release of Mass appeal. I don’t know.

Sometimes when artists record during official studio time, everything they record goes straight to the label to ensure they own it regardless of whether it was officially turned in for mastering or not. This is how these labels have hundreds of Juice World, XXX, etc tracks/verses to profit off for the next few years. It's also how they will fukk over NBA Youngboy, Future, Wayne, and all these other "record a million songs" dudes for decades to come.

I'd imagine Nas recorded some tracks at label studios but he's no doubt smart enough to also record shyt on the road. Meeting up with producers at an LA studio for instance. We know he went to Alchemist's house to record some tracks, for instance. So he owns that shyt. Only question is how much did he record independent of the Def Jam studio. An album's worth of stuff? EP? Multiple albums? I bet he has a lot of stuff that he owns. Only other obstacle would be the samples. It's easier to go through Def Jam for clearances than to do it as an independent artist.

Ok. That’s what I mean. Nas does seem like the type to just go to someone’s spot and record. I always wondered how much stuff he probably has with Green Lantern since Green was his dj on tour. Surely he could hook up the mic and record
