We all know the deal when it comes to Nas.
He’ll drop when he drops. There is no rhyme or reason to a Nas album release anymore lol. The very fact that he dropped two albums in two years is a minor damn miracle, and one of them was the mythological Lost Tapes sequel!
Since his next album will be his first OFFICIAL Mass Appeal/Sony release (Nasir and Lost Tapes 2 were in conjunction with Def Jam) i’m thinking he’ll really want to make it something special and exciting. I’d love to see him work with No ID and Justice League again (with a sprinkling of Salaam Remi and perhaps link up with Pete Rock again as Art Of It was FIRE) but then again, as long as its Nas I don’t give a fukk WHO he decides to work with. Its NAS!
Does Mass Appeal have any in house producers signed?
Doesn't seem like it, but I could be wrong. So far Mass Appeal has largely released albums from already established artists, whether rap (Fashawn) or other genres (DJ Shadow). They have a collection of new rappers too...I know they did some type of small tour a year or two ago, dunno how artist development works there so who knows where it'll go.
IMO acquiring producers is the most important aspect of running a label today. You need a room of guys who can make beats and come up with ideas that your more experienced
producers can build on. That set up also allows the beat makers to evolve into producers, so if you do your job right you could end up finding the next great one. This is also a good way of acquiring management, since many beat makers sign with some small scale manager. If that person is talented you can roll them into the squad too. It's why TDE is so successful and Dreamville is doing the same thing. Your top label head guy can't be on the road with every artist, so you need managers you trust who can go on the road and keep artists on schedule.
Atlanta-based labels are really good at all that shyt. From the production to the road managers...daps to them.
