It was the original postseason tournament and the final four was in Madison Square. Then I guess politics happened with the extreme need to market to the heartland and it became second tier. The final four happens in Imdina now.

Before the pandemic, we had four postseason tournaments so you had to be sorry sorry not to get in.

As I said in another area, NIT just hanging around for a merger. Higher seeds will get to play home games in early rounds like baseball.

Before the 70s, NIT used to be a more high profile tourney than the NCAA but that changed once NCAA added more teams. These days, it's just basically there for historical purposes.
