The reviews are largely mixed because people feel the age gap is cringey.
Age gaps like this are common though, and people usually don't have a problem with them.
This case is unique because people still see zendaya as child actress. doesn't help that she is still actively playing a highschool student in the MCU. So she kinda brought this on herself. If you want the grown roles you gotta give up the child ones can't have it both ways.
That being said, it doesn't really actress their performance in the movie. so i would probably grade this on a curve given the bad reveiws.

I don't think it's image. She has covers on all of the "elite" magazine, is considered stylish as hell, she just still has a young look to her.

LaKeith Stanfield and Issa Rae were terribly awkward in The Photograph. Issa Rae's parents had more believability and chemistry than those two.

JDW and Zendaya are really good actors. I think it will work out for them.
