I saw it tonight and... I'm trying not to review off a high but... I thought it was a masterpiece.
I thought the first Wolverine movie was trash and the 2nd one passable.
This one however may be in the Top 3/5 comic book movies.
The thought that instantly struck me after the beginning scene is how the hell could we stand to watch the Wolverine character in anything but an R rated film?
This is what we've been missing the whole time.
When you see him viciously maim someone with bloody punctures and gaping wounds you want to scream
at the screen and say, "This is what the fukk I'm talking about!"
Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart were REMARKABLE in this film, possibly Oscar worthy performances.
These are superheroes that have fought a 1000 battles and have lost a lot. Their vulnerability at this stage of game is heartbreaking to watch.
When X-23 enters their lives, she gives them another battle to fight and a possible chance of family. The little girl playing her was also excellent in the role.
Its funny, when I saw in the trailer that they had the X-Men comics in this world, I thought it was cheesy and jumped on the Deadpool 4th wall/meta shtick.
But it works and kinda passively swats down the arguments made by fanboys who get upset at these movies not following the comicbooks to a T.
In this (cinematic) world, there are real life consequences and you may not get to come back in the next issue.
I also like how small this film felt. Yes, there were big action sets but this, like Deadpool, felt more intimate and character driven.
Its a refreshing speed from the typical "we need to stop the big bad guy or the city/world/universe will explode" storylines.
