During the timing of Zack being fired, he never made a public statement and that was telling in itself.
The crew were not happy with WB's decision, made remarks in support of Zack during the press release.
And from what I recall a couple executives showed up at the shoot and realized they made a blunder with consideration of Superman vs Batman critical lack of success and its huge drop in the box office after the first week.
The fact that he was shooting two parts also played into their decision and he was fired.
The daughter passing away was an unfortunate coincidence which was used in an effort to say it was a mutual decision.
My opinion was he wasn't the guy at all but they should have just bit the bullet and rode it out with him.
We'll never get the Affleck's version of Batman due to this entire fiasco and that is the real loss.
PS: I don't have time to look for the source but just seeing how the events played out with Whedon being brought in and scrubbing 95% of the already shot movie - it's pretty evident he got Warners blessing to do that.
