This movie cost like $50 to make so WB is gonna see a huge profit off it. Easy money. They've been smart, Shazam was highly profitable too. This has a smaller budget than that did.

a Joker origin story works because Joker has no origin to begin with. The only thing we know about him that's canon is that his name is Joker, he looks like a clown and he kills people.

Also, there are tons of Joker stories (okay, a lot of them Batman and Joker stories but still) that don't take place in existing continuity, so an out-of-continuity movie isn't even that far removed from the stories most comic book writers tell with the Joker.
