Yeah, the whole superhero not revealing his secret identity to someone he cares about is a played out trope 
. I went through that for the longest watching Smallville. Plus they haven't really even established a good reason why either, it's not like Mark's vocalized he's afraid an arch enemy would use Amber against him. Plus he has to know all those excuses could only last so long

BTW I’m on like issue 17 of the book and I can comfortably say that you can both read the book and the show and still be satisfied with both. The show makes improvements to the characters that the book lacks at this point within issue 17.
