Sounds like Sean Baker did his thing again with Anora. Haven’t seen Mikey Madison in anything really since Scream and Better Things so I’m glad to see her get her leading shine here. Best actress buzz? Can’t wait.
Great film. Inspired by the videogame Stray (a cat navigating through a post-apocalyptic world) and Primal (Gennedy's no dialogue animated tv show), this strikes a chord in how storytelling can be done when you put proper care into your work. Not a single word spoken but the emotion is translated thoroughly in this one. There isn't a plot really...you're just watching these animals survive various situations while bonding and it's great cinema.
Some of the themes present are really useful at times like these. Film makes it pretty clear that at points in life you just have to go with the flow and find where you fit in life. You also have to be willing to work with others you might not consider natural friends to get tasks completed.
You see with the bird, that angering your own group is sometimes inevitable to benefit others and you will pay a big price for it.
