This mutation represents a clear warning signal. PB2 E627K enhances viral replication in mammalian hosts by optimizing the polymerase enzyme for functionality at human body temperatures (~37°C). This adaptation lowers the species barrier, enabling the virus to replicate efficiently in humans, a critical step toward zoonotic spillover and potential sustained transmission.
In practical terms, this mutation marks a possible tipping point where the virus could circulate efficiently among humans if other factors align, such as efficient binding to human upper respiratory tract receptors (α2,6-linked sialic acids)
:francis: apparently we are 1 more mutation away from full blown human transmission

Reading through some Bluesky stuff. I don't think we will have a Pandemic at the moment, because it seems that everyone who has been getting sick... has been getting it from contact with other Animals, mostly Cows. Until there is spread from Human to Human, then it be more worrisome, which can still happen but right now everyone that's been getting sick has been getting it from animals.

The problem is we’re one mutation away.

And at a 54% case fatality rate, that could implicate that billions of people will just die from this.

The scary part in the incoming administrations lack of fukks to give

@prime Risk
Not good, not good at all.

H5N1 is nasty. Highly pathogenic in birds and has one hell of a human mortality rate weighing in at 54%.

H5N1 is the bad one.

@Eric Feigl-Ding
Dairy herds positive with H5N1 avian flu—505 herds in 15 states. It’s not fizzling out. Worrisome.

Hope yall still wearing your masks outchea

:hubie: But seriously though, never step outside without it.

Smart people are masking up. That’s all you need to know if you’re even slightly on the fence.

I also suggest everyone get on Bluesky. You get still see what actual researchers, doctors and other medical professionals are saying, no filter.

I’d rather be plugged into what they’re saying than what someone on twitter is saying off the top of their dome.
