One thing that I don't understand, why was Ned fostered by Jon Arryn in the first place? His pops was still alive when he was a kid right?
this is one of the theories out there (not based on spoilers/information that hasn't been given in the shows already, but I'll spoiler it anyway) -
the theory is that maybe the lords of westeros actually WERE plotting to overthrow the Mad King - perhaps to get him to step down for his son Rhaegar - once he started going crazy, and that the various marriages and fostering across different countries (baratheon/stark, tully/arryn, stark/tully, etc) were meant to secure alliances in preparation for this
