Did cats expect them to jump into battles right out the gate? They couldn't skip over all those Winterfell reunions and meetings. IMO the only that could've been shortened was the dragon riding sequence but even that was to show Jon's Targ heritage since only Targaryens have rode dragons.

Weak ass season 7 being mostly spectacle over substance is what happens when they eliminate the stuff some people are complaining about in here
