First, you need to get yourself and bank verified on an exchange. Most would prefer coinbase. Start there.
On coinbase you can buy bitcoin, etherium, and litecoin. All 3 are trending up so buying and holding seems like a good plan.
If you're interested in dabbling in the various "alt-coins", you can buy those off of other exchanges like Bittrex using the btc/eth you got from Coinbase.

I just started at the end of May and the beginning of June. I started with Coinbase and they were the easiest one for me to get verified with as I just needed to wait a few days to get verified. They have some limits for the first few months on the amounts you can buy/sell, but if you're putting in $1,000 then you won't have to worry.
I also signed up on Gemini, Kraken, and Poloniex, but all of those took a week or two to get fully verified.
I also signed up for Bittrex which verified me pretty much right away. I've been buying on coinbase, then moving my currency over the Bittrex to purchase Antshares.
How often does this shyt move compared to the stock exchange? Is there trends etc...

My Litecoin holding steady too. Might get some more Litecoin in case something causes it to jump
