An incompetent, aged Congress combined with strong tech lobbying is a dangerous combination.

I’m 43 (:flabbynsick:) and highly doubt I’ll see a major, national data security law passed a la GDPR in my lifetime. The data as a commodity horse is long gone from the barn.

The US tech lobby is why I think this has a non-zero chance of happening.

As someone in tech, I can tell you that TikTok is eating Google/YouTube, IG/FB, and Snapchat's lunch right now.

Wouldn't surprise me if those later companies are funding some of the "ban TikTok" we're hearing from Congress recently.

I actually dont have tiktok so wont comment on if it should be banned
However
Huawei devices are banned in US so make of that what you will

I was wondering to myself recently if those devices in space just pick up billions of thought bubbles 💭💭💭💭 on earth with different colour codes

Didn't even think about that crybaby-esque route for those companies to complain. shyt even FB is just as bad hoovering up data from people.

Ban all social media. :manny:

Zeroing in on Tiktkok/China misses the point. Its all of em.
Social media is just the tip of the iceberg
AWS backs everything from social media to government sites and we know they collecting and profiting off user data
Like everything else in this country the private sector is at fault

I will say social media was FAR better when it was dumb. No corporate marketing algorithms, you saw things in order of people posting them, no mal-vertising based tracking. Not even algorithms for showing more content that you like. It continues to perpetuate echo chambers and divides in the population.

But yet again, you'd almost have to ditch the whole thing because you can't go back on this stuff now. Legislating it out of existence may be the best bet.

What is the US Tech Lobby? Is that some sort of agency?

China is using it harvest data and surveil people and it's turning Americans into even bigger idiots

Nothing of value lost if it happens nationally

Yeah, there are multiple good reasons to get rid of that shyt and I won't be the least bit sad about it.

India already banned it years ago. Of course they started their own local versions so people are still doing the stupid stuff but it's not as viral and at least the Chinese aren't getting data from it.

There are articles out there about how the social media sites hired dozens of psychologists and shyt to purposely make the sites addictive. Not conspiracy theory, this is all open information.

Something as simple as "see posts in the order they come" would completely revolutionize social media, striking a blow to half the negative impacts without hurting any of the positive. But they won't do that because the negative impacts ARE the goal, they want that shyt to be addictive.

There's a lot of angles to it really and none of them are good for Americans regarding China and then obviously our government just can't get their heads around data protection/rights. The EU seems to get it and idk about Asia and the rest of the world. One thing I was thinking about today is that the US never really dealt with the Cambridge Analytica/election interference scandals and protecting American's data fully.

I rarely interact with people younger than me but I still play video games probably out of nostalgia and a lot of the guys can literally not function without watching a tiktok every 10-20 seconds it's really disturbing and sad honestly... I hope it isn't widespread but have a feeling that's probably a thing

My foster daughter is addicted too. She has her own channel mostly doing lip syncs and ~10,000 followers and it's pretty sad to me.

The supposed "Trump ban" was never any more than a ruse to try to force China to sell a US subsidiary of TikTok to Trump's billionaire buddy at Oracle.

This kind of shyt is why banning tiktok won't do shyt. Too much money to be made one way or another...

Ban all social media. :manny:

Zeroing in on Tiktkok/China misses the point. Its all of em.

Ban all collaboration/messaging/streaming apps too.

Zoom, Teams, Google Meet, Twitch, etc.

Just posting to bunch of 'we collect ya data, opt out' shyt like the EU won't amount to fukk all since people have to click approve (or sign-in) to get the full experience...
