The city of San Diego is getting ready to kick off the year’s most high-profile geekfest this week when Comic-Con comes rolling into town. There has been a lot of news about what we
won’tsee from some of the regular attendees this year. No new
Star Wars trailer! No
Game of Thrones creators! And, most shockingly,
no Marvel at all! That’s right, the biggest player in all of popular geekdom won’t be hogging the spotlight in Hall H this year. But there will still be
plenty of new footage, exciting casting announcements, and surprise appearances to whet the appetite of any geek-loving film or television fan. (Actually, given that “geek” is now unquestionably the mainstream, maybe it’s more accurate to say “any film or television fan.”) Here are some burning questions we hope to have answered this year in San Diego. Check back in to vanityfair.com throughout the week for up-to-the-minute coverage and behind-the-scenes looks at the biggest costume party of the year.
Who Will Be the Next Star Wars Director? Star Wars fans who are worried about openly weeping in public can breathe easy.
Entertainment Weekly reports that Lucasfilm won’t be showing any new nostalgia-heavy trailers this year at Comic-Con. In fact, they won’t be showing any footage at all. But Lucasfilm
has promised a few surprises and
Entertainment Weekly reports that cast members who haven’t yet spoken publicly about their roles in the franchise may appear in Hall H. So, if luck, or the Force, is with us, representatives from the Dark Side like
Domhnall Gleeson, Adam Driver, Lupita Nyong’o, and
Gwendoline Christie could all be in attendance. This would also be a great venue for Lucasfilm president
Kathleen Kennedy to reveal who will be
replacing Josh Trank as the director of the announced
Boba Fett spin-off movie. The most intriguing front-runner?
Former Wonder Woman director Michelle MacLaren has reportedly been in
talks with Disney. That
could mean they want her to direct a Marvel movie, or it could mean MacLaren will join
Gareth Edwards, J.J. Abrams, and
Rian Johnson in the
Star Wars directors boys’ club.
Is Jon Snow Coming Back to Game of Thrones? O.K., this one might be a bit of a stretch, especially considering
Kit Harington, D.B. Weiss,and
David Benioff have all said they’re
not attending Comic-Con this year. But with every
cast-member interview,
Harington sighting in Belfast, or
obsessive report on the length of his hair, fans are becoming more convinced that the Lord Commander is not gone for good. In the Internet age of the overly invested fan, keeping a surprise that big under wraps until next season (or even the release of the next book) seems laughable. And wouldn’t the announcement of Snow’s return—possibly with a flash of footage of the Commander opening his eyes—make for one hell of a splash in Hall H? Harington and Jon Snow aside, the
Game of Thronespresentation will,
as it has in years past, likely feature a video announcing the new cast members for Season 6. Will characters like
Randyll Tarly or Euron Greyjoy be enough to fill the hole Jon Snow left behind? Maybe not, but they’re welcome to try.
Will We Finally See Footage of The Hateful Eight? The short answer? Yes.
Quentin Tarantino’s highly anticipated (and much beleaguered) western debuted some very
well-received footage at Cine Gear Expo last month, but the general public has yet to see any footage in a trailer or even an official teaser. (Though, thanks to
Entertainment Weekly, we have seen still images of the cast in costume.) People
did go nuts for a
mysterious animated teaser that was posted earlier this year and then abruptly taken down. Imagine what they’ll do when they see the actual footage Tarantino is bringing to Comic-Con? Tarantino and some members of the
all-star cast will be on hand to discuss the footage and the long road the film has taken from
stolen-script scandal to
splashy, Christmas 70-mm release. It’s no wonder Tarantino has been guarded about this project since the original script was leaked online, but with the premiere only six months away, it’s time to start laying those cards on the table.
What Will American Horror Story Be Like Without Jessica Lange? Many familiar faces are
returning for
American Horror Story’sfifth season, but FX’s anthology series will look quite different this year without its star
Jessica Lange. Sadly, Lange’s
platinum-blonde replacement,
Lady Gaga, won’t be at Comic-Con, but creator
Ryan Murphy and stars
Kathy Bates, Angela Bassett, Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, and
Matt Bomer will hopefully be able to fill in some of the mysterious details surrounding
American Horror Story: Hotel and debut one of the show’s
notoriously creepy teasers.
What Does Oscar Isaac Look Like as Apocalypse? After Warner Bros., 20th Century Fox has the biggest superhero slate at Comic-Con this year with
X-Men: Apocalypse,
Ryan Reynolds’s Deadpool,
Channing Tatum’s Gambit, and the long-awaited
Fantastic Four all on the horizon. Crowd favorite Deadpool
could make some sort of appearance, but director
Bryan Singer has specifically teased that he’ll be bringing new footage from
X-Men: Apocalypse that
could include our first look at
Oscar Isaacas
the hulking villain Apocalypse. With Marvel and Thanos skipping out this year, what better time for 20th Century Fox to reveal a
huge purple baddie of their very own?
What Tricks Do the Hunger Games Rebels Have up Their Sleeves? Lionsgate has
already premiered some very flashy, high-concept posters for the
Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2, indicating that this won’t be a straight-forward panel. Though Lionsgate has yet to confirm who will attend Comic-Con this year, we can imagine, given that this is Katniss’s last ride, that
Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, and
Liam Hemsworth will all be there. Knowing the
very creative approach the marketing team took when promoting
Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1, it’s possible we could see some form of the rebellion storm the stage in Hall H. It’s not like Katniss to go out with a whimper.
Will Chris Pine Play Green Lantern? With Marvel taking the year off of Comic-Con, and Lucasfilm not debuting any new footage, the Warner Bros. panel is the biggest show in town. The centerpiece of the panel will be
Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice with stars
Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck, Gal Gadot, Amy Adams, Jesse Eisenberg, Jeremy Irons, and
Holly Hunter all attending. But since Warner Bros. first announced their
hugely ambitious Justice League slate, DC comic fans have been wondering who will play the new version of Green Lantern. Though the first stand-alone Green Lantern movie won’t premiere until 2020 (at the earliest), he’s an integral part of the Justice League and will likely be seeded into earlier films in the franchise. Warner Bros. has already announced
Jason Momoa as Aquaman,
Ray Fisher as Cyborg,
Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman and
Ezra Miller as The Flash. All we need now is a Green Lantern and Shazam. Well,
rumor has it Chris Pine—who was originally thought to be in talks to play Wonder Woman’s boyfriend Steve Trevor—has been offered the role. I mean, Marvel can’t keep
all the charming actors named Chris to themselves, right? The only snag with this rumor is that many fans were hoping that instead of the Hal Jordan version of Green Lantern, they would be getting the
John Stewart version that many younger fans
grew up with on the Justice League cartoon. Stewart—not to be confused with
The Daily Show host—would certainly be the more diverse choice. Well, fret not, fans, rumor has it Warner Bros. is actually looking to cast the roles of both Stewart
and Jordan. That’s right,
twoGreen Lanterns a.k.a.
Green Lantern Corps. We certainly can’t accuse Warner Bros. of not going big.
Will We See Jared Leto’s Joker in Action? Unveiling
two Green Lanterns would be enough to put the Warner Bros. panel on the map, but it seems unlikely they would let such a high-profile opportunity to debut
Jared Leto’s Joker pass them by. We’ve seen
behind-the-scenes Suicide Squad glimpses and one possibly
not-so-serious Twitter image, but we’ve yet to
really see the Joker in all his glory. Leto could easily disrupt the
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice panel in character (just as
Tom Hiddleston crashed the Marvel panel as Loki two years ago) or, given the Joker’s taste of mischief, we could even see him hijack some
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice footage with some video of his own. Either way, attendees of the Warner Bros. panel should be ready for Mr. J to appear at any moment.
