Cancer death rates are twice as high where GM crops and agricultural chemicals are used
By -
July 5, 2014

By David Gutierrez | Natural News
Agricultural regions that see a heavy use of chemicals and in which genetically modified (GM) crops are grown have a cancer death rate twice as high as the national average, according to a report by the Ministry of Health of Cordoba Province in Argentina.

“Once again, what we have complained about for years was confirmed,” said Medardo Avila Vazquez of the University Network for Environment and Health (Reduas), “and especially what doctors say about the sprayed towns and areas affected by industrial agriculture. Cancer cases are multiplying as never before in areas with massive use of pesticides.”

Cancer has skyrocketed

The Provincial Tumour Registry and the Department of Statistics and Census analyzed data on cancer tumors and death rates between the years of 2004 and 2009. The report found that the highest rate of cancer deaths occurred in the area known as “pampa gringa,” which also has the heaviest use of agrochemicals and GM crops.

According to the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer, Argentina’s cancer death rate is 115.13 per 100,000. Yet, the Cordoba report found that the average cancer death rate for the province was significantly higher, at 134.8 in the capital city of Cordoba and 158 in the province as a whole. When the departments in the pampa gringa were examined separately, the rate shot up even higher: 216.8 in San Justo, 217.4 in Union, 228.4 in Presidente Roque Saenz Pena and 229.8 in Marcos Juarez.

The report was taken as vindication by Cordoba residents and public health advocates, who have been warning of climbing cancer rates in the province for years.

“The study of Cordoba matches the surveys we conducted in 18 industrial agriculture areas. Cancer has skyrocketed in the last 15 years,” said doctor and researcher Damian Verzenassi of the Faculty of Medical Sciences in Rosario.

Experts demand government action

Yet, the government report itself actually deemphasized the finding of exceptionally high rates of cancer deaths in agricultural areas. Instead, the report focused on analyzing cancer incidences (new cases) by age, sex and location, and comparing incidence rates with those rates in other countries.

However, health advocates immediately drew the connection with agricultural chemicals and demanded government action to protect the public.

According to Fernando Manas of the National University of Rio Cuarto, “there is evidence of high levels of genetic damage in people of Marcos Juarez, which may result from unintentional exposure to pesticides.”

Manas noted that, for example, lakes, soils and rainwater in the Marcos Juarez department have been found to be contaminated with the herbicide glyphosate (“Roundup”) and one of its breakdown products, AMPA. Over the past eight years, researchers at Rio Cuarto have published 15 separate papers confirming that Cordoba residents who have been exposed to pesticides suffer from genetic damage and a higher risk of cancer.

Verzenassi condemned efforts by the government and industry to obscure the connection between agrochemicals and cancer.

“They keep demanding studies on something that is already proven and do not take urgent measures to protect the population,” he said. “There is ample evidence that the agricultural model has health consequences, we are talking about a production model that is a huge public health problem.”

Another researcher, Avila Vazquez of the University Network for Environment and Health, echoed this criticism and called for the immediate implementation of measures to prohibit aerial spraying, keep chemical applications at least one km from homes and ban agrochemical storage and spraying from urban areas.

“The tobacco companies denied the link between smoking and cancer, and took decades to recognize the truth,” Vazquez said. “The biotech and agrochemical corporations are the same as the tobacco industry, they lie and favor business over the health of the population.”

Group of Farmers Files Lawsuit Against Monsanto Claiming Roundup Gave Them All Cancer
Published: May 18, 2016

Source: Baran Hines

A group of Nebraska farmers diagnosed with cancer is suing Monsanto, maker of agricultural chemicals and GMO seed. The farmers allege that glyphosate, the popular Monsanto herbicide, caused them to develop cancer and that the company intentionally misled the public about the dangers of the world’s most widely used herbicide.

The lawsuit was filed last Wednesday in federal court in Lincoln, Nebraska. The farmers are seeking punitive damages, alleging defective design, failure to warn, negligence and breach of warranty.

Glyphosate is the active ingredient in Monsanto’s Roundup brand herbicide, which is advertised as being able to kill almost any weed. However, the company claims it is safe to use on food. Monsanto’s Roundup Ready GMO seeds are designed to resist the chemicals so the plants can still grow after being sprayed.

The lawsuit also claims that Monsanto “concealed or systematically sought to discredit” research showing links between glyphosate and cancer and continues to do so.

“Monsanto championed falsified data and has attacked legitimate studies that revealed Roundup’s dangers. Monsanto led a campaign of misinformation to convince government agencies, farmers and the general population that Roundup is safe. Its continuing denial extends to the date of this Complaint,” the lawsuit states.

Glyphosate was designated as a probable cause of cancer in March 2015 by the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer. The report noted glyphosate is most frequently associated with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and other hematopoietic cancers, including multiple myelomas, lymphocytic lymphoma, and B-cell lymphoma.

All of the farmers in the group have been diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

Later in 2015, California announced plans to label glyphosate as a carcinogen based on the IARC’s classification. Monsanto has fought back against the declaration with a lawsuit.

Several countries have banned or restricted glyphosate since its classification as a possible carcinogen by the IARC, including the Netherlands, France, Bermuda and Sri Lanka.

According to the farmers’ lawsuit, Roundup is used on more than 100 varieties of crops, and the volume of glyphosate applied to crops grown in the U.S. has increased from 85 million pounds in 2001 to 185 million pounds by 2007.

“Glyphosate is found in rivers, streams, and groundwater in agricultural areas where Roundup is used. It has been found in food, the urine of exposed persons, and in the urine of urban dwellers without direct contact with glyphosate,” according to the complaint.

Monsanto has been the target of a series of new lawsuits including in India and Burkina Faso, both related to its Bt Cotton. The company is also being sued by 7 major US cities including Portland, Seattle, and San Diego.

GMO policy is also in focus for the 2016 election season as Vermont’s labeling law is the first in the nation to require labels for GMO ingredients. Vermont’s law takes effect in July 2016. In March, the U.S. Senate voted 48-49 against SB 2609, a bill that would have blocked states from making their own GMO labeling laws. Senate Bill 2609, the Biotech Labeling Solutions Act has been called the DARK Act, an acronym for Deny Americans the Right to Know.

The new Vermont law has some companies planning to label all products with GMO ingredients including MARS, maker of M&M’s and SNICKERS, fruit company Del Monte, and other large food conglomerates like Kellogg’s, and General Mills.

10 Garden Tips for Companion Planting, Increased Vegetable Yields and Natural Pest Control
Sunday, May 22, 2016 8:11

Companion planting for pest control and to encourage plants to grow with more vigor has fascinated men for centuries; however, few backyard gardeners know how to use these natural methods for organic sustainability and how to improve your garden. Plants that work together to help one another grow; plants that repel insects for organic pest management; and plants that repel other plants for natural herbicide control are of great value to both small backyard gardeners and commercial growers.

Certain protective botanicals don’t always act instantaneously, and must be planted several years or seasons in advance to be of utmost cumulative effect. For example, companion planting pest control using marigolds to prevent nematode growth should be done at least one season ahead before expecting to see great results.

It’s important to remember that both secretions and odors from various plants are valuable traits for organic pest control and companion planting where repelling or attracting certain aspects and effects is attempted.

Ten easy companion planting tips for to use now

Companion planting for chemical free pesticides and organic sustainability is a huge subject that can take years to master; however, there are a few easy things you can do in your own garden right now to make use of this intriguing method of gardening.

1. Protect carrots by planting them with leeks to repel both carrot and onion flies. They won’t even lay their eggs and your yield will increase tremendously.

2. Growing radishes or kohlrabi? Plant them with lettuce to repel earth flies that hate the smell of lettuce and make them take flight.

3. Aphids will injure almost all plants, causing headaches for gardeners everywhere. To repel aphids, plant nasturiums around broccoli and bunches of chives among sunflowers and tomatoes to discourage infestations.

4. Ladybugs are natural enemies to aphids and are excellent for use in organic pest management. Order ladybugs in bulk online or buy them from gardening centers. If you’re wondering how to improve your garden and reduce the aphid population, this is one of the most effective methods of doing so.

5. Asparagus and tomatoes complement one another and improve the vigor of both plants. Place a row of asparagus between two rows of tomato plants.

6. Beans and potatoes work in concert for organic pest control. Planting bush beans with potatoes in alternating rows protects the spuds from the Colorado potato beetle and the beans from the Mexican bean beetle.

7. Broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables belonging to the cabbage family do well when companion planted with… READ THE FULL STORY HERE: http://www.jbbardot.com/10-tips-for-companion-planting-for-natural-pest-control-and-organic-sustainability-increase-vegetable-yields-and-improve-flavor/

and turning it into a little hustle. What ya think?

Sounds cool, let me know how it works out. I have never sold anything, usually just plant enough for the fam but it would be interesting if I could find a way to scale.

How will you utilize the green house to make it a worthy investment? To extend the growing season? You should consider getting basic stuff like frost blankets, floating row covers, etc and figuring out what you want to do to make $. Growing for market isn't a side hustle, it's a lot of planning, purchasing up front, direct marketing, etc. Where will you sell, what will make your items more desirable, etc.

TO FEED HUMANKIND, WE NEED THE FARMS OF THE FUTURE TODAY
BY BETSY ISAACSONON 10/22/15 AT 6:12 AM

Right now—at this very moment—there are over 7 billion humans crawling on the Earth. That’s a lot of mouths to feed. To sustain them all, we’ve taken 40 percent of the planet’s total landmass and turned it into cornfields and almond orchards, cattle ranches and orange groves, all to churn out the cereals, produce and meat that feed humanity.

Unfortunately, that’s left us in a bit of a bind. The world population is expected to grow to 9.6 billion by 2050, and according to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), if we want to avoid mass malnutrition, we’re going to have to up our food production by 70 percent by 2050. The problem is most of the land we can work for food is already being cultivated. The rest is atop mountains, covered by desert sands or in Antarctica. The only potential farmland left would require slashing and burning the world’s remaining rain forests. That means we’re going to have to make some large-scale changes to how we farm.

Was looking for a thread like this. Became interested in a particular farming technique called 'hydroponics'. Where you use water instead of soil to grow the plants. I plan on turning an empty aquarium I have into a hydroponics system.
