been brushing diligently and wearing a stocking cap for most of the day for over 2 weeks......not one single ripple seen on my head

this shyt is discouraging cause my girl thinks im wasting my time and wants me to just grow my hair out instead.

This is the perfect starting length.
Get a good moisturizer (again, I use Double Butter Cream, or Shea Moisture, even Oink Lotion or Blue Magic will work.), get a soft and medium brush, and just get 100 strokes in each direction, and durag up.
Minimum of three times a day, and you should see ripples if you’re consistent on every side.

We have the same texture of hair, and I’ve been on and off 360s/180s for years.
You should have a full pattern within 4 weeks and after two cut cycles (having it cut to a 1.5) you should be spinning w/ just a few forks.

Aight I'm gonna put yall on game because I want my brothas to succeed. People wanna speak in riddles when talking about getting waves but I got you. Here are the steps I took that had me getting people seasick just by looking at me.

#1 rule for newbies - brush your hair at least an hour a day. I found that watching a Netflix show while brushing makes it go by fast.

1. To start, shave your head down to 1.5. Even all around. If you already got hair, shave it down. You starting a new life style so start with a blank slate.

2. After cut, use a soft brush. Anything harder will give you scalp burns. Moisturize your hair after your shower and brush. As your hair gets longer, upgrade to medium brush. Do this for 4-5 weeks. You should have ripples at least.

3. Get haircut and shave down to 1.5 again. Repeat step 2 and go for 8 weeks. Your waves should definitely be visible by then.

4. Now it's for the "real" haircut. The third cut should show off all of the hard work you put in it. Your new cut should have your barber like as he shaving off all that wolf hair to reveal a tropical paradise underneath. I normally go for a 2 with a short taper but 1.5 should do nicely for those with coarse hair.

against the grain. damn near cut all the hair off. it was no more than a 0.5 cut. Never had waves before so im not sure how long its gonna take me to be spinning since I got that African steel wool coarse texture. Hell even my own African family be commenting about how rough my hair is

Probably gotta stop brushing so much and mattin ur shyt down w/ a durag. Remember, when u building waves, u straightening out curly hair to a degree and laying it down. When said hair is laid down u blockin other pores from letting hair grow from them, thus makin ur shyt not as full as it once was. U gotta fall back from the waves in the short term sometimes to save it in the long run. Try somethin different and let ya shyt grow for a few months. Try a taper or a small fro or somethin. Let yo shyt breathe.

Ive never had waves before, so there never was a reason to cut with the grain. I cut my hair against the grain as a way to remove the old hair and start from scratch. Thats all. Obviously i wont be cutting like that going forward.

Du rag just compact hair.
A stocking cap dries, diffuses and makes your waves move true with no compact mat action like a du rag.

I’m a wild sleeper at night so if I wear just a stocking cap it ends up on the floor by the time I wake up in the morning


So I use double compression. The Boo Boo cap and then durag.


If I cut my hair low then I use triple compression. Reg Stocking cap, boo boo cap, then durag
