My sentiments as well. There are two scenarios I’m thinking of. Not saying these are the only two but these are what I’m focusing on:

1. Trump nominates a replacement. McConnell holds a vote. Romney/Murkowski/Collins/etc vote the nominee down, this preventing a replacement until after January 20th.

2. Trump nominates a replacement. McConnell holds a vote. Either before the election or during the lame duck, the replacement is confirmed.

Thinking about this logically...if scenario one happens, the end result is Biden picks the replacement and the SC math remains 5-4 in favor of conservatives. However if scenario two happens, Democrats would almost certainly respond by packing the court at which point they could take the majority depending on how many seats are added.

It’s dangerous but...at this point I prefer the second option. Of course that hinges on Biden actually winning. And if Trump creates enough chaos to throw the election to the SC, where he has a 6-3 advantage...bad things could happen.
If a replacement is picked i dont think Dems win

This admin has shown again and again if they can do it, they will

Ginsburg dying was a blessing to them...its a get out of losing free card

Their criminals. They'll do whatever to escape consequences

They will use the new justice to steal the election, however brazenly

I can see these "Republican Voters Against Trump" people or people unsure/leaning toward Biden jumping back to Trump just to get the Conservative Supreme Court pick.

The election is less certain. This will help Trump.

Electorally?

I'm not sure of that at all. The American public has a tendency to punish overreach. Ramming through an SC Justice before the election would guarantee high turnout for Democrats which is bad in any race for Republicans.

I have friends that registered to vote just last night.

Democrats will push keeping ACA and abortion to the forefront. Biden has not needed to campaign on fear until now. The rhetoric will now ratchet up significantly.

Turnout for the Dems was probably going to be high anyway. Unfortunately Trump probably does have more to gain. :francis:

Help me understand. Republicans are usually extremely consistent in their voting efforts. There are a very small number of undecideds out there. In terms of turnouts, it always Democrats that have to hammer GOTV campaigns because our side almost never votes in full force. So why would Trump have more to gain?

There are a lot of single-issue anti-abortion voters this may sway. Especially when it comes to Hispanic voters.

And Biden's whole schtick is that he can appeal to moderate Republicans. I'm not sure how many of those there really are but a SC pick is likely to put them back in Trump's camp regardless.

This takes the focus on Trump and changes the election from a judgement on Trump to a Supreme Court seat. Which is music to conservative voters ears and helps Trump politically. They will come back home to Trump just for that justice pick.

McConnell has the votes to do it right now with Pence breaking the tie at the most.
