Word, I live in Raleigh, where do you live? How many Canes or Checkers games have you been to? Report back on how many black folk you see at the game, g!

I live in Charlotte, and I have been to many Checkers games over the years. 2 so far this year and a 3rd on Saturday. My daughter has gotten into watching hockey and loves to go to the games. It also helps that her co-worker at her job is the son of the Checkers' owner, so she can go and any games she wants for free.

As for the Canes, I went to school in the Raleigh/Durham area (NCCU) so I went to a handful of games over the years while there in school. Last Canes game I went to was Game 5 of the Stanley Cup final the year they won the cup, and was upset that night they lost in OT when they could have won the Cup. My daughter and I will drive up to the game Thursday and looking forward to it. I will be rooting for the Rangers and she will for the Canes. Should be fun.

If my Rangers get knocked out (by either Carolina or Tampa), then I want a Western Conference team to win the Cup (Colorado, Edmonton or Calgary).

Oh shyt you've been here a minute. That Cup win was 16 years ago. Did you follow hockey before you got to NC?

In general how many black people do you see at these games, and how many other black people have you found over the years that follow hockey here in NC? I've yet to meet anyone who is an avid fan, but as I mentioned earlier I wasn't looking for them either. I have seen a handful of us rocking Canes gear around town, a literal handful, so thats something but I've yet to go to a game so seeing cats with the gear on may be as much about supporting the home team as it is about being really into hockey...

The NBA missed when they didn't bring the Hornets here, they'd have the support of all races, this is just a basketball area thru and thru. Granted, Jordan's primary residence is in Charlotte and obviously the sentimental value of the Hornets and their history is in Charlotte, so it was extremely hard to pivot from that. But NBA would win here big time, Charlotte is more of a football city than a basketball town and golf and Nascar are as big or nearly as big in Charlotte as basketball as well...

Sadly, I dont see alot of us at the games, but I hope that i see a good amount at these upcoming ones this week. Im sure alot of people are rocking the gear in the area due to the late playoff run, and its the only pro team in the Triangle.

I have been into hockey since I moved down from NYC, so I followed the Rangers, but its always been behind basketball, football and baseball. The sport is just not catered or geared toward us at all, so black people dont really mess with it.

As for the Hornets thing, the NBA didnt miss at all bringing to Charlotte. You have NO idea how big the Hornets were here in Charlotte in 1989. It was THE show. Attendance champions for their first 10 years or so. The original owner and their scandals and greed soured the relationship with the city. That and losing teams. The Hornets may do better now in the Triangle (in 2022) but not a chance in the 90s, and before they moved to New Orleans. Up there, the Hornets would be 3rd behind UNC and Duke basketball during the season. Also, they would need a new arena to play in, as there wouldnt be enough dates to go around in Raleigh at PNC with the Canes, and NC State basketball.

The Panthers were out at the strip club until 3 AM on Monday. Season on the line they didn't care.
