Album of the Year:

Vampire Weekend "Modern Vampires of the City" -- No other album came close to the mix of creativity, artistry, and lyricism together in a package that was also pop friendly. This band was always just a "oh,yeah, they are cool I guess" type of band to me....but with this album they finally proved that all the hype heaped upon them years ago was justified

Runner Up:

Colin Stetson "New History Warfare Vol. 3: To See More Light" -- While avant garde jazz may not be a genre that can appeal to everybody, Colin Stetson took it as close to the mainstream as it can go here. There is no album that made me experience the raw, visceral emotion that this one did this year despite some solid competition. The ultimate record to listen to in the dark with headphones or a high end stereo system.

San Fermin "San Fermin"
The Flaming Lips "The Terror"
Youth Lagoon "Wondrous Bughouse"

Local Natives "Hummingbird"
Phosphorescent "Muchacho"
Foxygen "We Are the 21st Century Ambassadors of Peace & Magic"

Ehh, I thought that Arctic Monkeys was a 7/10 at best. Just found it a bit too mundane and lacking the zaniness of their past records. I really value creativity and "soul" in music (not soul as in the genre, just that unexplainable emotion), two things that Arctic Monkeys are usually quite strong at and I thought their newest album lacked both bigtime

As far as the Vampire Weekend album, I feel you 100% that the attraction can be hard to understand. I was in the same boat as you before this newest album. But they presented a package that was full of classic melodies and lyrics that were very deep and meaningful to the 20-40 age group. I mentioned creativity and soul...they always had the creativity, they have finally added the soul.

I can't describe how good that first note (and extended intro) feels for Do I Wanna Know? live. It's :wow: :banderas: and :lawd: rolled into one.

They've killed this year, seem to be making moves over in the US too
