I wholeheartedly agree with the Pres. The onus is on me as an artist to speak up AND educate the masses through my music, as I did on my song "Negative to Positive"

Dark Prince - Negative To Positive (@whoisDarkPrince EP) - YouTube

Nice shameless plug:myman:

But this is what I'm talkin about, its nice to wanna educate but what about this song or any of these other socially aware songs scream out "whoa this should be on the radio, the masses would like this"....u can't not make music for the masses than get mad the masses don't hear it or feel it.

And truthfully these concious rappers is pigeonholed by they own niche fans they don't wanna upset....Let Lupe or whoever get Future or Drake to sing a hook on a concious track,or let it sound at all pop and the fans will be sayin they sold out,we gon act like it ain't happen with Slaughterhouse:mjpls:? Not sayin it wuz a good album but these nerds don't even like the attempt to be made a lot of times...concious hit records can still be made, its a lot harder tho which is why most new artist don't try....it would be cool for already established rappers to do it,but could sumbody like Drake now do a concious record? Or would his image now make it impossible for people to take him serious....I hate to bring up Plies:lolbron: but he wuz the last commercial artist I remember puttin out concious records I think the masses woulda consumed.

Thanks for the feedback fellas. I think that a lot of artists find a certain niche and create music that fits it. Once that happens, your audience expects a certain sound from you and any deviation from that could be hit or miss. Case in point, Jay-Z- Minority Report. A lot of ppl felt it didn't sound genuine coming from him cuz that's not what they felt Hov usually raps about. It's fine line artists draw to keep their fans/audience happy and still grow creatively as an artist. Not many fans are receptive to that.

Personally tho, I plan to just make music, and continuously grow and broaden my horizons as an artist. I encourage you both to check out my debut EP, and let me know what you think. Much props and respect to ya.

We have tons of mainstream conscious rappers? Since when?

All I see is Kendrick Lamar and Lupe posted in this thread.:heh:

One conscious song every now and then = conscious?

Please don't bring up old Talib, Mos Def, Nas.:heh:

I hate the term "conscious" rap. Do you hear conscious rock?

Is non-conscious rap "unconscious"?:heh:

Most rap fans know that rappers are still speaking on social issues.

I think everyone is dancing around the fact that a lot of these rappers don't have the ability or haven't shown that they can make conscious songs that are good and have enough commercial appeal to get radio spins or get people talking..

Lupe Fiasco's bytch Bad is a great example. I appreciate the his attempt at speaking on an issue but that song just isnt good.
