Obama calls today ‘best of times and worst of times’ for blacks | theGrio

President Obama said, “these are both the best of times and the worst of times” for African-Americans in a radio interview Thursday with the Rev. Al Sharpton, contrasting the great opportunities available to some blacks with the continued effects of the recession for many others.

“These are both the best of times and worst of times for the African-American community. I think if you work hard and you have opportunity and you’re able to take advantage of it … you know the sky’s the limit for African-Americans in our country in a way that just wasn’t true a generation ago,” he told Sharpton. “On the other hand, the lingering effects of the Great Recession means there’s a whole lot of people in a whole lot of communities that are still struggling.”

The interview was one of the three Obama conducted with black radio hosts on Thursday, part of an overall media blitz to pressure Republicans in Congress to delay $85 billion in budget cuts known as sequestration that will go into effect starting on March 1. He also spoke with Yolanda Adams and Joe Madison. (Those sessions have not been broadcast yet.)

In his discussion with Sharpton, Obama also spoke about watching his daughters learn more about the Civil Rights Movement during Black History Month.

“You know one of the things that’s most valuable for me is to watch the next generation absorb history that you and I may take for granted, but for young people is fresh and new,” he said. “So when I see Malia and Sasha taking time to read more about not just Rosa Parks and Dr. King, but Bob Moses and Fannie Lou Hamer and Charles Houston and all the other people who laid the foundation and the ground work for the Civil Rights Movement, I think that is very powerful.”

On the budget cuts, he repeated familiar themes, laying out his plan for balancing cuts in spending with tax increases for the wealthy to reduce the federal budget deficit.

“When you look at polling, 75 percent of the American people agree with me that to reduce our deficit sensibly is through a combination of spending cuts and tax revenue, and if we spread that out over several years, it wouldn’t have a bad impact on our economy. In fact it would strengthen our economy by putting us on a more stable financial footing,” he said. “Unfortunately, I think Republicans are so dug in on this notion of never raising taxes it becomes difficult for them to see an obvious answer right in front of them.”

That's the key thing here. Not enough black people have that. How can you have opportunity when things like stop and frisk still exist? when employers won't hire you because they heard your voice on the phone and you "sounded black" ? when the war on drugs is still going?

Latinos got the dream act
Gays got a repeal of DADT, and official support of same-sex marriage.
Women got Lilly leadbeter

What do black people get? ERPA support? nope. Refinements or a straight up abandonment of stop & frisk? nope. More money being pumped into inner city facilities? nope. DC's schools are still literally falling apart. Federal laws that restore voting(and other) rights to felons who have done their time? nope. There are so many things that could be done to help black people get opportunity, but he's staying silent on these things and nothing is being done.

Part of me understands why. He's the first black president, if he tried this shyt, white people would not see him as president for the whole country instead of just president for black people(not that they don't already see him that way anyway). He doesn't want to set a precedent, and fukk it up for future black frontrunners because the white majority will think "This guy will only look out for his own like the last guy did so I'm not voting" Maybe if there is ever another black president then the laws in the country that seem to unfairly target black people will be examined and thrown out with federal help. I doubt there will ever be another black president considering how much the latin population is growing, and its no secret that latinos don't particularly like us. It will probably just be business as usual until most black people begin to pool their resources together to build up the community. Building private schools, private clinics, private city maintainence services, private media, etc. If rich black celebrities invested in black businesses instead of european designers, I wouldn't be surprised if the community would be better off.

Alternatively, considering how rapidly the middle class is growing in African countries, I wouldn't be surprised if in 40 years not enough seems to have changed, that a lot of black people will just start saying "fukk it" and moving to these countries to seek job opportunities as skilled and unskilled labourers. While North America and Europe decline, Africa, Asia, and Latin America rise. Its only a matter of time until more black people start realizing that they're on a sinking ship and decide to go where they'll have their dignity as well as better economic opportunities.

You're going way too far, but that is the HL way. Black people are underrepresented in every field.

That's because education is not the priority in the AA community.

Everyone thinks the will be a baller or a football player :bryan:

How sohh, I remember flipping through the AA scholarship book.

All the big scholarships were geared towards fields in the STEM department, more importantly Engineering and Physics...

Not so much chem,bio,etc...

Because you just said that black people should stop taking philosophy and political science courses as if they're art degrees. It's like how yesterday you missed the big part of that law school article which was linking to an article that supported social science degrees. My point is simple, african-americans (and hispanics) are underrepresented in the newsroom, in hollywood, as professors and teachers, in phd programs, in the legal field, in the medical field, accounting, etc.

Yet, you're sitting here telling people to ignore all that and just go be a STEM major as if everyone will enjoy that and as if there is no other place for other skill sets in the economy. There is a difference between making a nuanced decision, and saying abandon the social sciences in general. You're basically saying that we should put the hands of fields like psychology, criminology, political science, psychology and all other sorts of studies that lead to the policies that are enacted to affect the lives of people of color up to just white people.

Black people are underrepresented in the STEM fields, sure, but it's not the only avenue. Besides, starting salaries for liberal arts majors are up 3.9%. That's not to say I don't recognize supply and demand and the fact that STEM majors have the highest starting salaries nor that I don't want people of color to challenge themselves and get over that fear of math.

Honestly I don't even sh*t on art degrees. My main grief, is with individuals who are lost with no where to go. The people without a plan. The people who go to school and don't know what they want to be or how to get there. The people who don't do their research / homework

If art is your thing so be it. If that's your passion, I say go for it. There's a lot of dope innovation being done in the "arts". I think art gets a bad rap as well.

If people of color want to be doctors, Lawyers, teachers, professors, accountants, hard / soft scientist, 88m3, etc... So be it. That's good at least they know what they want to do and how to get there.

Once again my main grief is with unsure / unmotivated people. People who want to make a lot of money, travel the world and secure as little debt as possible in undergrad. The Solution: Engineering. No more no less...

He wants support against the sequestration, so he made his rounds to all the black radio shows. If we are (un)lucky he will be on Leno tonight.

The government is a leach.

They need to learn to stop spending so much, so we wouldn't have to raise taxes.

There is a reason that 10 out of the 15 richest counties in America are within close distance to Washington.

All of these counties are a hop, skip, and jump away from D.C.

No, not hollywood. Not new york. These are D.C. folk, raping the U.S. citizens so that they can live well on Tax Dollars.

There is nothing in these parts, except government, government, and more government. Most of these people work for the government, which is why they live so close to D.C.

These rich folks do not live in Silicon Valley or New York or Chicago. The richest in this country live the closest to the government, who is able to strong arm people out of their money - LEGALLY. :scusthov:

No one wants to discuss that Federal and State works earn more than workers in the private sector. After all, who is paying their salary. If there were no private sector employees there could be no government employees.

Even if the private sector wanted to fight for more pay, they couldn't since most of it is going to the government. President Obama is right, these are some bad times for black folk. The question is what will he do, make it worse or make it better.
