Dragging a body in a duffle bag at 4am is something someone with no driver's license would do. If the killer was a scorned lover, he would've put her in the trunk and drove several miles from the scene of the crime to dump the body. I can't see her cheating in the house while her 13 year old son is home. She would cheat at a motel.
The police originally had the boy in handcuffs when they took him in for questioning. Police "rule out" people as suspects all the time... whole time they're collecting evidence. You can't rule out anyone as a suspect this early in a murder investigation. For all we know, the kid could've killed his mom, confessed the murder to his dad, and his dad walked him through what he needed to do and say to the cops.

my theory is somewhat similar to this.
The police could have ruled out the dad and son as suspects to potentially keep them from harming themselves or fleeing the country.

If the son did it then he had already knew the code. I personally think there was no time for the killer to request her passcode, hence the way she was killed. Seems like she fought her killer

He’s probably been messing around her for years. Dude is a hedge fund owner which means he ain’t never home and ain’t trying to be home. They probably both knew what it was.

Police believe the killer knew Gaal because there were no signs of a break-in, and considering the violent nature of the crime, they suspect the attack was personal and fueled by anger specifically toward her, sources said.
But the grisly slay did not appear to be pre-meditated, sources said.
“[Detectives] don’t think it was a planned murder,” a law-enforcement source said.
“He left a blood trail for five blocks from the house,” the source said.
“It was like a trail of bread crumbs.
If you want to kill somebody, you try to make it a little cleaner, be a little more prepared. He didn’t go with something to move her body. He took something from the house,” the source said
“I’m sure with that kind of blood, there’s lots of DNA there,” the source added. “The killer’s DNA has gotta be in that blood. It’s not a clean scene
