(CBS News) NEW YORK -- A designer drug made popular in song lyrics is blamed for causing two overdose deaths in New York over the weekend.

Olivia Rotondo (left) and Jeffrey Russ both died of apparent MDMA overdoses at the Electric Zoo festival in New York City over the Labor Day weekend.

Those who take the drug may not realize how dangerous it is.

More than 100,000 fans expected a three-day dance party on New York's Randall's Island, but the mayor's office cut the Electric Zoo festival short after two concert goers overdosed and died.

"The Department of Health did not want to see a re-occurrence," said New York City Police Commissioner Ray Kelly.

The drug in question is MDMA, or "molly" -- a more pure, more potent form of ecstasy that police say claimed the lives of 23-year-old Rochester, N.Y., native Jeffrey Russ and 20-year-old Olivia Rotondo of Providence, R.I.

"Kids will often think of this as a very benign drug, and that is scary," said Dr. Damon Raskin, an addiction specialist.

Raskin said the drug lowers inhibitions, giving the user a sense of euphoria. This high gives way to a crash resulting in anxiety and depression.

"They will often mix ecstasy with other drugs, especially at parties, like alcohol and marijuana," Raskin said. "I think that the combination of these drugs makes them all the more toxic."

In 2011, hospitals reported more than 22,000 MDMA-related emergency room visits -- a 120 percent increase from 2004, according to the Drug Abuse Warning Network.

The club drug has made its way back into popularity, thanks in part to its glamorization in music and youth culture.

This is the third death in less than a week. A 19-year-old New Hampshire woman overdosed in Boston last week at a Zedd concert. One of some 40 artists forced to cancel appearances on Sunday.

MDMA, nicknamed "molly," has become glorified in pop and youth culture.

you can't OD from MDMA.

False.

Seretonin syndrome -> hyperthermia -> seizures -> renal failure -> coma -> death

But I doubt the Molly being taken by people at these festivals is pure MDMA. I've had it before and it's a different feeling. Most of the stuff that's at these festivals is probably a chemical bath of other stuff with some MDMA. As long as people want something, they'll get it, use it and abuse it. And probably will care less about what's actually in what they're willingly consuming.

Funny thing is Molly/MDMA has been almost exclusively associated with the EDM scene since it became mainstream again. Lets see if Mainstream Amerikkka starts putting a laser on Artists like Cedric Gervais the same way they did to N.W.A back in the 90's:beli:

But what do the artists have to do with it? NOTHING.

I see what you're saying though and a selective outrage is definitely apparent in this case.

Correct. You can over dose from anything I think. Water, cheddar cheese, pizza, just intake something SO much that your body can not handle it.

based on the LD50 I'd need to take over 5 grams to have a 50% chance of death

these stories are so sensational. I haven't seen any drug test results, I guarantee you a high amount of alcohol was involved or heavy shyt like heroin/meth.

There won't be any drug test results, and probably won't be any toxicology reports. At this point in time it just seems like this story is just running off of pure sensationalism and fearmongering (getting the parents of kids who go to these raves/massives/festivals riled up and not even introducing a proper dialogue about drug use).

Sites like erowid.org have always been there, but how many people even refer to it?

BTW, apparently the guy that died was found with meth on his person according to one of these articles that came out after the event.

So when is meth=molly?

Ofcourse, I expect any drug neophyte to call any powdery white substance at this point "molly".

What do they expect to happen when we can't even have honest and open dialogue about drugs or their effects? Of course they're going to make uneducated decisions when they feel like the government only misinforms and lies about the effects of certain drugs. The same government that makes something relatively benign like pure MDMA illegal which allows it to be cut with more dangerous drugs like heroin, meth, caffeine and other nasty shyt. Everything is ass backwards.
