He probably wants to keep the WALTER name for himself in case he leave or gets fired it won’t be trademarked by WWE so he’ll have free use.

Certain legal things makes this happen. I'm sure if he wanted to keep going he had to change and he likely doesn't want WWE trademarking WALTER and not being able to use that as a fall back if he ever got deavored.This would’ve happened regardless
