NPR revisits the black gender war discourse over the Color Purple...I didn't know how big of a deal this was back then

It's definitely uncomfortable and I can see ppl using it to get their trash hot takes off, when the discussion is so, so nuanced.

The spirit of this movie reared its head during the R Kelly fiasco when older men didn't have a problem with the situation.. And they often brought up this time period of the color purple.

REALLY?

Man, I really didn't observe this angle with the color purple being brought up with R Kelly :mindblown:

They didn't bring up the color purple verbatim.. The men, and some women, routinely mentioned "this is what they did back in the day".. The time period was during the 20s-50s on former plantations throughout the south. The Color Purple was just a movie centered around that era.

That was a nasty time. I was like 13-14 years old and hearing the way ppl discussed that R Kelly situation was shocking to me. I knew that back in the 80s TCP was controversial. It was really a discussion about the representation of BM in media vs opening up the conversation around the experiences of BW and it's unfortunate that white supremacy forces us into these stumbling blocks.

Probably because a lot of black men and women passed that trauma down through the generations. We have to examine the trauma that happened to both men and woman because I still haven't heard anyone discuss how R Kelly was molested by family members.

It’s crazy listening to the podcast and they have that panel from damn near 40 years ago, discussing the same shot we discuss today.

My wife read the book.

She told me that the movie adds in A LOT more shyt. The book is just a series of letters that Nettie wrote (I think) but the movie expanded on things far beyond what you read.

Not sure if the movie makes BM look better or worse than the book. :manny:

Either way, it's not like that shyt didn't happen, so I'm not going to get too offended.
