You're basically saying J. Cole can be more creative/witty with his lyrics if he wanted to.

No, what I'm basically saying here is, whose subject matter and style you prefer is what it comes down to, like you said. Moreover, if an artist prefers to pun over paint pictures and be passionate, it's also because the artist prefers that, and nothing to do with talent or lack thereof. Both styles require lots of skill and 9 out of 10 a rapper who excels in one won't at the other. Rappers like Wale love to pun and are great at it. Rappers like J. Cole don't, but have their own strengths to level it out. Simple as that. Doesn't make Wale better or vice versa.

It's not even about rapping from different perspectives. He can rap from whatever perspective he wants, if it's basic, it's basic breh.

Huh? There's nothing basic about what J. Cole did on these tracks ironically with Wale.

You're just of the opinion J. Cole makes more basic music in general. Which is cool as it is to each their own. But double-meanings don't make you more lyrical, like using big words don't make you a better writer. It's down to who you're catering to what they'd actually prefer. Some people don't care for the abstract stuff bro. Face it.

No need to bring up Elzhi or Pharoahe Monch.

He's not seeing the guys that I named who are in his same lane when it comes to lyrical skill, period.

Yes, even in 2015, J. Cole isn't seeing Wale and Big Sean and with that bit of sentiment you have successfully driven your point home. Seriously get a grip.

Yeah, in 2015 Cole isn't really seeing his peers when it comes to straight up rapping.

SMH @ myself for forgetting Krit as well.

How did they listen to him before is the question :heh:

I kid...but really, even though people kinda put him in the "conscious" lane they really don't run the same race. I don't see how someone who likes Cole would be extra eager to do great than/less than with either album so quickly.

Cole is the superior rapper because he has a better cadence, voice, and subject matter. He is also more relatable to Black people.

Lupe's appeal to many is that they believe he's deep, intellectual and yall are impressed by how he spits fast multis.

Technique alone does not make one a better rapper.

I'm a fan of both, Lupe since I heard Switch on HipHopGame & J.Cole since his first appearance on Toca Tuesdays before the warmup. It was hard going back to Cole album because Lupe's had more quotables to go back to. I did revisit FHD tracks when I just threw my phone library on random. Both albums are enjoyable from a pure music standpoint so I don't understand why this thread was necessary. :yeshrug:

Now if we are talking SFTW2 then....:mjpls:

No chance I'm listening to that garbage again. :mjlol:

Love both but J cole's whole discography put together isn't half as good a the COOL in terms of musically and lyrically. Lupe has 2 arguable classic albums and Cole still doesn't have one yet. Honestly even though Cole might seem more relatable I disagree because I relate more with Lupe who grew up in a violent city, but still strived to do something positive in life.

J Cole is garbage... I cringe whenever I hear that single he has out on the radio... but I can tell T&Y is going to be this year's "Yeezus". I.e. a bad album that will be protected from criticism by faux intellectuals who claim "if you dont like it its because u arent smart enough to comprehend it".

There is such a thing as being too conceptual or cryptic, just like it's possible to be too obvious or direct (like J Cole's cringeworthy raps). In my opinion Lu is at his best when he is just straight spitting. That Enemy Of The State tape he did is probably his best piece of work to me.
