Unlike the Xbox and Switch, PlayStation's top 10 games ranked by average monthly active users (MAU) don't contain any first-party titles. Most of the slots on PlayStation, as well as on other platforms, are taken up by industry titans like Fortnite, Grand Theft Auto 5, and Modern Warfare 3.

This has ALWAYS been the case traditionally on PlayStation consoles.

Outside of GT, Sony almost never had genre king titles they made themselves.

The most continuous reason to buy Playstations has been, it's the platform with the best odds of 3P support coverage.

This really only changed with the ps3 gen and the loss of Sony's defacto 3P exclusives, and the importance of first party exclusives, which one title did so, which was TLOU.

Ueda titles could be considered genre kings for games as art ish, but there's too much competition from indies for them to be viable.

If they are a genre king of anything now, it'd be movie/narrative focused games I guess. But Sensua does exist tho.

Microsoft did and now does have a genre king.

First it was Halo for 1st person console shooters, which lost that title years ago to COD which microsoft now owns so they're back where they started.

Nintendo has quite a few; Mario Kart, Mario platformers, Zelda(newly recrowned)for action adventure, Pokemon for monster collecting and jrpgs, Fire Emblem for srpgs, Smash for Platform fighters and Animal Crossing for simulation titles.

So it's not surprising the most played falls where they do.

And

All the hottest 3rd party games, guaranteed.

Sony consoles have the power to run high quality AAA games, and also have connections to have exclusive timed Japanese titles like Final Fantasy and Metal Gear Solid in the past.

That's always been the allure of a Sony console. You get all the blockbuster online games, and also the "premium" high quality games
