No one from our generation played both sides of the fence better than Mariah Carey

America needs to adopt mixed race. We would have less dumb arguments like this.
This shyt is cringe. I understand that genetics is a funny thing and someone's phenotype may not necessarily indicate there ethnicity and probably vice versa, but this foolishness here is another level. By calling her black, she's being put in the same status as Nina Simone, Don Cheadle and Wesley Snipes—which is absolute lunacy. In my opinion the reason why black people accept this is a form of internalized white supremacy. We talk about "black is beautiful" but a lot of us don't believe that. A lot of people will rather have their children or spouses look like Mariah Carey than Lupita. But again just as BGS said: blackness in the United States is not a race or an ethnicity but a class.

Woman is talented. All I gotta say.

Two opera singing parents it was inevitable, though.

She does recall a nikka wake up call in her book. Some white girls in her school locked her in a closet and chanted n*gger at her. It was a good read if anybody is in to biographies.

People keep saying this on here as if that move would benefit Black people. Show me a country with a mixed/colored class where Black people have improved their social status or have less colorism because of a buffer group.

Do you remember the late 90s and early 00s push for a multiracial box on the Census before the Census decided on check all that apply? Completely spearheaded by White parents and conservative politicians like Gingrich and others like George Will loudly championed it. Black folks weren't hot on it for good reason.

Black America has had many prominent people with a background like Mariah's. Molefi Asante of all people called Black America one of the most culturally homogenous yet genetically heterogenous groups in the world.

Putting Mariah on a pedestal over Nina Simone or Chaka Khan just based on looks would be internalized self hatred but accepting her as Black, if she identifies as such, isn't weakness.

As long as Black is an underclass, ambiguous folks who don't want to fukk with us disqualify themselves. No need to push out those who are willing to be Black.

Mariah Carey looked at least partially black in her early career. Can't always look at skin color by itself...her nose, lips, and eyes are very afro/indigenous looking. If you changed her shade from beige to brown/dark-skinned it wouldn't be a question.

Time to put the one drop rule aside
All it does is bring ridiculous discourse like what happened last year with Kamala Harris. In some circles it seemed like people wanted to dismiss her Indian heritage like that was a negative for her. Even the Republicans latched on to it for their advantage
