People thought there were false motives at play, when it's far more likely that Visceral just loves Dead Space that much, and because they could empathize...they reach out to their community pretty well.
I remember getting the first Dead Space for free, 3 days earlier than everyone else, because I was a part of a viral promotion for the game (No Known Survivors) that helped set up the universe and story.
Hell, just for that, I received an envelope with inkblots (which would later end up in the game during the opening of Dead Space 2) that had clues revealing the first trailer's release.
