I gotta rewatch Okada-Shibata. I didn't appreciate it enough the first time.

Finally watched the Shibata/Okada match.

Shyt was :damn:

Shibata beat that nikka like he was owed money. The forearms the slap the headbutt :picard: :whoa:

There was like a 5-10 minute stretch toward the end where I legit was :lupe: about Okada's health. I cannot recall a time a defending champion was, for all intents and purposes, VIOLATED for such a sustained period of time in such a manner, only to go on and still win. Loved that Okada had to show a grimier side to him to survive this one.

The finish was trash, somewhat because of how abrupt it was. Had Okada done anything sans the Rainmaker, I could have bought it. The story of "Okada underestimated an on-his-game Shibata and that coupled with the mistake of allowing Shibata/his ego to turn this into a strike fest led to him losing the title." was right there in their hands. Hell, had Okada been forced to try some never before seen move to compensate for this ass-whooping he got -- and make no mistake, it was an ass-whooping that felt years in the making at times -- it would have been a certified classic. Instead, Shibata falls to mediocre Rain Makers

That said, the crowd LOVED Shibata. As far as I am concerned, he's a made dude and basically owns the mantle of "last dude you want a match with" right now. I'd imagine he's got IC/IWGP gold in his future within the next 365 days.

Unrelated: Hiromu Takahashi put Kushida in the bushes with the utmost ferocity.:gucci::dwillhuh:

Not a single fukk was given by the Time Bomb :wow::hubie:

Okada does need a super finisher. Can't continue to just keep spamming RMs until you get the win. That's why I love 90s AJPW. Tiered finishers make a huge difference. Especially when building a match where Okada is getting decimated for 20mins. Then to hit 3 RMs(one of which was no-sold) for the win is kinda:ld:

Still a great match. Very different than Okada vs Omega. Idk if that makes it better. Gotta marinate on that.:jbhmm:

I still think he needs an equalizer more than a "death finisher". The way he wrestles, he needs a strike or something that stops his opponent in his tracks and resets the control of the match. I think he tried to do that with his dropkicks but that's clearly not enough.

If we are going with All Japan comparison then I think he needs to develop Misawa's elbow, or Kawada's kicks, or Kobashi's various types of chops. As I mentioned, Tanahashi ended up using the dragon screw and leg work as his equalizer during his Ace run (which I admittedly didn't like much, but eventually I kinda got what was the point of his "pointless" legwork), it was far from a perfect weapon but he tried something out at least. Hashimoto had his size so he could always get pissed and beat the fukk out of his opponent to get things back to zero. Nakamura had his knees (and healing super powers), etc.

Okada needs to find something else besides the Rainmaker to mount his comebacks, if not he's gonna end up having John Cena matches in a context were that kind of thing wont work as well as it did in the US. Either that or he's gotta change the formula he's found for his big title matches.

I don't just come on here and talk bullshyt but I gotta say, Okada (and Shibata) dropped another classic :manny:

Some will say the slow start hampered this and some of the no-selling but not too much for me. The start was all about Shibata out wrestling Okada and getting in his head. This made Okada lose it and start using heel tactics and shyt he was clearly off his game. He got in a lot of offense but Shibata shut that shyt down and proceeded to beat the fukking shyt out of Okada for the rest of the match. Okada got these spots in here and there but Shibata was dominating the action and he lured Okada into exchanging strikes which is never a good idea. That visual with Shibata head butting dude and splitting his head open, blood trickling down was crazy. The one thing Shibata did wrong was get hit by the Rainmaker which is one of the more protected finishers in the business. And that's what did him in. I can't get too mad at that, that's wrestling 101.

I did think this was possibly a missed opportunity. The crowd wanted Shibata from the very start. Okada did win some of the crowd back over (his selling at the end was very good) but I think a short title run for Shibata would have been very nice. But oh well, he'll probably get it sooner than later. Maybe the Dome show unless Omega gets it first.

Rest of the show was decent. I like War Machine winning the tag titles and it was a good match. ZSJ/Goto was decent and Suzuki was fun at the end.

I also liked how they switched up the formula with KUSHIDA/Takahashi. Everyone was expecting a 15-20 minute spot fest and Takahashi pretty much destroys him in under 5. That gave Takahashi a lot of credibility. They should do shyt like that more often. :ehh:

Shibata suffered a subdural hematoma and had emergency surgery.

A subdural hematoma is most often the result of a severe head injury. This type of subdural hematoma is among the deadliest of all head injuries. The bleeding fills the brain area very rapidly, compressing brain tissue. This often results in brain injury and may lead to death.

:damn: :damn: :damn: Hopefully this is the end of those headbutts.
