Nintendo knew after Gamecube, that if they kept up with hardware high end tendencies, they would have been charging $5-700 per console and would alienate Japan altogether. Prices like that, would have tanked the gaming industry and themselves when the Great Recession happened. Sony from the PS3 and PS4 eras, ere taking in losses in hardware sales and couldn't rebound until year 4 or 5 into that console generation.
How you intend to take a loss for that extended period of time, just to eat for 1-2 years to make a profit per console sold, before the next console gen rolls around? That would have bankrupt Nintendo if they kept giving into the graphics-whore culture that M$ and Sony did. Not only that, but Sony alienated Japan and forced Japanese 3rd party companies to be forced to send their formely Playstation-exclusive IP's on the XBox to recoup on sales and rebound during that same time period of economic hardship. Now look, after 2017, The Switch all but became a way of life in the Land of the Rising Sun, while other consoles are obsolete on their charts.

But ignoring that Nintendo has done well since then especially when you include the DS and 3ds as well.
Even as a Nintendo stan, man Wii prob has the most overrated library out of any console honestly. Switch's library already shyts on it. Hell I could argue the Wii U had a better first-party catalog

Nintendo are also believers in the autonomy of developers. They work with other developers but Nintendo is their own beast and are very old school and traditional.

They’ve only had two highly successful consoles, the wii and the original NES, and the switch is basically a handheld.
Nintendo basically going fully into the portable business was the best business decision they ever made. It’s where they’ve always thrived, since the original Gameboy to the 3DS.

I bought mine hacked, played metal gear ac!d, Dissidia, crisis core, FFT….
Yeah, and so is Smash Bros, Cadence of Hyrule, etc.
Nintendo will let other devs play with their IP, but they do so with a watchful eye on the process. Been that way since Phillips shyt the bed with the Zelda CDi games.
People forget that capcom developed 3 zelda games. Nintendo has always been willing to work with 3rd party studios but its rare that they look to buy other studios to acquire ips because they dont need it. Nintendo's ip backlog is already the best in the industry.
They should scoop up Mercury Steam after the success of Dread
