Anyone who was around at the time knows Sony always stayed behind the curve graphically until Ps3 and that's cuz they charged 600 dollars at release.
PlayStation itself was extremely popular and they knew how to keep game content flowing. The first successful CD ROM console gave it a cool factor and the advantage when it came to sound and people liked the fmv. But gameplay graphics N64 had more horsepower. Developers also churned out more games on Ps1 cuz it was easier and cheaper to develop for. Gaming journalism also began to have a Sony bias going. All these factors contributed to Sony selling way more consoles.
Me personally I had way better memories on the N64 and better gameplay experiences and if you look at greatest games of all times lists history feels the same way.
