Nobody calls Denzel movies “black movies”

Nobody calls Spike Lee movies “black movies”

Nobody called Black Panther a “black movie”

They’re just movies.

Only low-brow stereotypical films get pigeonholed as “black movies”. Let’s keep it a buck. :yeshrug:
This is a post completely divorced from reality if I've ever seen it.
:pachaha:

Anybody who doesn't want to see your movie because it's called a "Black movie" won't
show up to see the shyt in the FIRST PLACE.

Like, do you y'all really think the same audience that enjoys corny, frat bro, white boy humor
is going to suddenly want to see Madea because it's no longer marketed as "Black" but instead "Just a movie" ?

shyt falls flat tbh and ignores that the audience will choose what the fukk they want to watch off rip.
You can call it whatever the fukk you want but the audience isn't stupid.

I get her point, it's silly to add the word 'black' to a film just because it has a black cast

It depends on the movie. I never heard Black Panther or The Nutty Professor considered as "black movies".

Honestly, non-black people are going to consider any movie with majority black people as a black movie. Calling it something else won't make any real difference.

Eddie Murphy does not market his movies as black movies. If you take the fresh prince and Martin and family matters all black cast but only Martin was marketed as a black show

Whether you agree with her or not, the truth still remains. Calling stuff black owned will turn off 50% of the USA simply because black people own it. That’s 50% of your profits gone instantly. And if we’re being brutally honest, I’ve seen our own people have low expectations for a service because it’s black owned. It is what it is

:patrice:

need receipts for this. i don’t think people are turned off by the actual ownership being black, more than they perceive a business attaching the label “black owned” as a pandering gesture that speaks to the mediocrity of their product.

if what you are selling is marketable, there’s no reason for you to announce that you’re “black owned.”

What yes they do lmao. Besides Denzel all your examples are wrong. Black Panther is definitely thought of as a black movie his name is black panther.

Also when the last time Denzel has been in a movie where his wife is black?
Black Panther is a mainstream Marvel film its not advertised as a black movie like Boyz n The Hood for example. A movie that would be pigeonholed as a hood flick or a black movie but in my opinion is one of the best pieces of American cinema period.

It's like mob flicks for example aren't called "Italian movies" they're considered part of the gangster movie genre and are enjoyed by all audiences.

Yes they are. It's a common trope that Italians are affiliated with the mob.

Hold on so you sincerely think Black Panther is not a black movie?

If anything hood movies are not black movies. Why do you associate them as such

They are not sold as "Italian movies" though they're gangster movies and everyone watches them they are mainstream American movies.

No, Black Panther is a mainstream Marvel film.

Its not what I think its what most people think if you asked most they'd consider hood Tubi movies as "black movies" hell some of these streaming platforms have movie categories like Black Lives Matter Collection or "black movies or "black cinema".

She isn't necessarily wrong as it could potentially alienate certain viewing bases by pigeonholing a film with a label. That goes for any film and not just black led ones. It's a reason why a lot of films watch how they label a film during promotion.

It's all about the money at the end of the day especially since black led films don't have the luxury of making bread overseas like other films do.

This is wrong, as someone who has a business with black faces all over it. No matter how you say it, if a certain demographic sees a black face on the cover, they will not watch it period.

In the south, no black businesses get business from white conservatives unless the business is a SERVICE. Cooking, cleaning, etc. They love paying black folks to do that.

Shoe brand? Wedding Photography? Any kind of creative? No thanks.

Saying black just helps alleviate the real core audience to know it wasnt made by a c00n.
